Always Do This

I've been talking recently about affiliate marketing as being a good way to earn money from your writing.

Selling your own books is even better.

But however you choose to earn money as a writer, there's one thing that you must always be doing.

And that is growing your email list.

Having products to sell and plenty of online content to promote it is great.

But it won't help much if no-one sees it.

There are several ways you can promote your work, but the best way is through email.

Customers aren't going to seek you out.

It's you that has to stay in touch with them.

You need to let them know what you're selling and how it can help them.

And the bigger your list, the better.

So always be promoting yourself and your work to get more subscribers.

And then stay in touch with them often.

Send them lots of useful tips and information and give them links to all your promotional content.

Sent out emails every week, or preferably, every day.

Become the favourite person in their inbox.

Learn how to do it all plus download free products that can help you at http://ruthiswriting.com/links/supertips.html.

The Guaranteed Way To Earn Money As An Affiliate Marketer

Making money as an affiliate marketer isn't difficult (it all depends on what you're promoting, how you're promoting it, and who you're promoting it to).

It can also be done for free.

All it takes is time.

Time to write up all your online content, your emails, and anything else you'll be writing and using to drive sales.

And there's also something else you have to do.

Or rather, it's something that you should NOT do.

This is the mistake that many writers make when they try and earn money as an affiliate marketer.

Doing this can almost guarantee to kill sales.

But not doing it is guaranteed to help you make sales.

So what is it that I'm talking about?

Trying to sell too many things at once.

Offering multiple products at once often confuses people.

And promoting too many things on your website looks cheap and "salesy."

Instead, I always find it better to just pick one product to sell, and then promote the hell out of it.

We're coming to the New Year now, so if you want to make more money as an affiliate marketer, see if you can make 2018 your highest earning year yet.

Make a plan and stick to it.

How I Started Making Money Online

I loved it when making money online from my writing became possible, because, before that, it was almost impossible.

The internet made it so easy - and so fast.

One of the ways I first started earning money online was with affiliate marketing through Click Bank.

(After a few years, I stopped marketing for them because they changed their Ts & Cs for affiliates and actually threatened to take money from affiliates if they didn't make enough sales. Since then they have revised their payment system and now I get paid every 2 weeks with no threat of deductions.)

At first I did it by simply putting banners on my website.

And while that made me some money, I soon realised that there was much more to affiliate marketing than this, with some affiliates earning six-figure incomes.

It took quite a bit of researching and practice, but eventually I discovered how to do it properly.

Now it’s much easier to make money with affiliate marketing because there is so much more information around.

There’s even a website called Super Tips (http://ruthiswriting.com/links/supertips.html) that not only has a free ClickBank forum, they have some really useful products like their Affiliate Shield software (http://ruthiswriting.com/links/affiliateshield.html) that can do several things, including changing affiliate links so that they bypass the product's sales page and go straight to the payment page, so that you can create your own, better sales page.

You only have to look at forums and products like these to see how much help there is now to earn money online from affiliate sales.

Which is how I first began earning money from my writing.

And I still do it today.

Spending Money To Make Money

A couple of weeks ago, I made an online purchase.

It was a huge purchase that cost me $2,000.

Why did I spend so much?

Because I plan to use what I bought to help me earn more money.

So it wasn't so much a purchase, as an investment.

What I bought was a huge package of marketing materials - DVDs, Audios, and books.

I haven't received them yet because they're physical products and are being shipped to me here in Australia from the USA.

Over the years, I've bought literally dozens (probably hundreds) of products about writing and marketing, but I've never paid so much before.

But there are many people who baulk at paying anything for what they think will help them write more and earn more.

They only want things that are free (or really REALLY cheap).

Then they wonder why they don't make any money.

But I've decided to go big or go home.

I'm aiming higher with what I buy, what I create, and how much money I make.

And I started big with the $2,000 marketing bundle.

If you feel the same way, make the switch.

Invest in whatever it is that will help you move your writing business forward.

And then get going.

Don't let penny-pinching hold you back any longer.

The Incredibly Simple Way I've Automated Affiliate Marketing

VigLink banner I discovered something recently that is a really simple way to earn money from a blog.

It’s called VigLink.

This is a company that is affiliated to hundreds of other companies, and when you copy and paste a small piece of script onto your blog, VigLink will automatically change words in your blog posts to affiliate links or PPC links so that you can earn money without having to do anything else.

The way it works is like this:

You sign up for an account at VigLink.

They supply a small piece of script for your blog/website.

Then if you mention a product, (say, eBay, for instance), it will automatically become an affiliate link.

And if you give a specific URL to a product, it will instantly be turned into an affiliate link if it is associated with one of the companies that they are affiliated with.

And that’s all there is to it.

VigLink is affiliated with some really top companies, many won’t even allow affiliates with small blogs.

But through VigLink you can gain access to all them all using just one account.

However, there is one thing you need to be aware of.

VigLink is only looking for blogs and websites with plenty of traffic and quality content that’s updated regularly.

So they only approve sites manually.

But once you have your account set up and your site’s been approved, all you have to do is keep writing and posting and let VigLink take care of your affiliate and PPC links.

So if you’re looking for a quick and extremely simple way to make more money from your blog, give VigLink a try.

I’m already using it myself on some of my websites.

Use the link below to find out more.

Writing For The Trade Press; An Overlooked Writing Market

“Stack Of Newspapers With Mouse” by hywards
Freelance writing is not only a great way to earn money as a writer, but it can also be a way to supplement your publishing income while you write your books.

But there is one freelance writing market that is overlooked by many writers, which means that there can be a better chance for you to get your articles published.

And that market is writing for the trade press.

Simply put, the trade press is magazines and newspapers aimed at a certain industry.

And, surprisingly, you'll find that most industries have their own publications.

So if you've ever had a job (and who hasn't), then you'll have worked in one particular industry or another. And chances are really high that there are publications aimed at others who work in the same industry.

But what do they publish?

Well, it all depends on the publication. But generally, they're looking for work-related stories or news about changes in the industry.

And even if you haven't' worked in a particular industry yourself, you might know someone who did, or still does, with an interesting story to tell and you could ask them if you can write about them.

You could even interview an older person about how different the job was in their day.

Once you start looking there should be ample ideas of what you can pitch to one of these magazines or newspapers (or even their websites).

And there's a place online that you can find a huge worldwide list of trade press publications.

Want to know where that list is?

You'll find a link to it in my free ebook for subscribers, "Writing For Cash."

If you haven't already downloaded your own copy, subscribe now.

And if you've already downloaded it but haven't used it yet...what are you waiting for?

Start writing and submitting and start earning money as a freelance writer.

How to Make Money Writing Articles

Image: “Female Writing On Notebook” by adamr
If you can write an article in 15 minutes or less, then you can earn a really good income from your writing.

How?

To begin with, just look at some of the ways you can make money from articles:

  • Blog posts
  • PLR
  • Emails
  • Auto-responders
  • Marketing
  • Expand into ebook chapters
  • Ghost Writing

From this list alone you can see that article writing is the life-blood of any online business with most of them how having a blog that they use to keep their customers up-to-date with all their latest news and products. They also have a list of subscribers who they regularly send emails to.

If you have an information website, you need to write content/articles all the time as well as use articles for marketing to bring more visitors to your site.

But just exactly how do you use articles to make money online?

Ghost writing is usually the first way people think about making money from writing articles. Writing them for other people. But as I’ve just shown you, there are various other ways to use articles too.

But is it really possible to write an article in 15 minutes, including research, proofing and editing?

To write articles quickly, it doesn’t take much talent but it does take the ability to put the right strategy in place and use it to write articles fast. It’s like setting up an assembly line of researching, writing and proofing.

Of course, I’m not talking about writing huge, long, descriptive articles, but about short informative articles of around 350 to 400 words.

These articles are meant to be general guides and not in-depth discussions. And the quickest way to make money out of these types of articles is to write them for other people.

Busy clients are happy to pay for quick articles.

If you use articles for marketing, they’re great for driving traffic back to your site or promoting your latest book. But if you want instant cash, then ghost writing is the way to do it.

You could advertise your article writing services on websites like fiverr.com and charge $5 per article. This way, working 5 hours a day, means you can write 100 articles a week (5 days a week) which will bring in a pretty good income, but you could probably charge more.

Another alternative is to write articles to market your own products or affiliate products. Done correctly, this can bring in a really steady income.

Penny Pinching Failures

Write Any Book In 28 Days Or Less
We all like to save money. I do too.

I’m always careful about what I buy and before I make a purchase I always think about what I’m going to use the item for (or how often will I wear it?), where I’m going to keep it, and how often it will come in handy.

Usually after much careful consideration I put things back on the shelf and leave the store.

And even if I’m grocery shopping I think of what I’m going to make with whatever ingredients I’m buying (I don’t buy much processed, ready-made-food) and how soon I’m going to do it.

And take away meals and eating out don’t happen too often for me. I much prefer my own food at home and even if I go for a day out, I’ll usually take my own drinks,  pack sandwiches and buy hot chips to go with them.

I’m pretty frugal in a lot of ways. I even have a notebook where I tally up everything I’ve bought in a month to see where I’m overspending (if at all) and where I can cut back.

Yep, I don’t like wasting money on things I don’t need or that I’m tricked into buying just because of clever marketing.

And I see others doing the same.

Except they’re doing it all wrong.

They’ll penny pinch at the supermarket yet buy takeaway food on the way home.

They’ll complain about the price of fuel and even drive around looking for the cheapest price, yet they’ll take short trips in their car every day instead of walking.

And how many people do you know who say that they have no money yet their kids have all the latest gadgets and toys?

I once saw a news item on TV on A Current Affair where they were talking to a couple who were being forced to move from their home because they said their mortgage was too high because of interest rate rises.

Yet I couldn’t get over the fact that they were packing up dozens of outdoor toys - swing sets, slippery dips, cubby house, sand pit, and multiple ride-on toys, and the mother of the two young children had a really fancy hair cut, manicured false finger nails and so much bling it much have weighed a ton.

And I see the same things happen when it comes to business.

People say they want to be successful, but when it comes to investing in themselves they don’t want to spend money on an ebook or an online course.
And I don’t know about you, but I much prefer to spend my money on things that are an investment in my writing.

Over the years I must have spent thousands of dollars on e-books, courses and other things that have helped me with my writing and marketing. I’ve even done a course in copywriting that cost several hundred dollars. I thought it was expensive but I knew that what I could learn would enable me to earn much more money than the cost of the course. And I was right.

I could have spent a few hundred dollars on a fancy computer or a bigger TV or ordered more takeaways so that I don’t have to cook.

But I’d rather spend my money on things that I need to help me write more, write better, market my work, make money blogging and writing, and sell more books.

How about you?

What are the important things you’re investing in?

How To Start a Money-Making Blog

Living the Laptop Lifestyle
There are so many people who want to work from home as an online blogger, but they don’t know how to start blogging or how to keep it going.

Luckily, because you’re already a writer, you’re ahead of the crowd because you’d have no trouble filling a blog with useful content.

But the big question is what to blog about?

It’s one thing to know that you want to earn money blogging, but knowing what to write about can be tricky.

The answer though is really simple.

You can either write about something you already know about

Or

Write about a subject you’re interested in.

As an example, in my ebook and blogging course, Living the Laptop Lifestyle, I demonstrate how this can be done with the subject of knitting.

This is a topic that many people know about because it’s their hobby. But is it really possible to have a money-making blog about something so simple as knitting?

On my sales page I show you an excerpt from the chapter about finding a niche for your blog and all the possibilities for earning income from something as simple as blogging about knitting.

I also know of one blogger who started a really popular blog about World War II. He had no first-hand experience of it, but he was passionate about the subject and could spend hours researching and reading about it and so put his efforts into a popular blog, which, unfortunately, he no longer has due to health and personal complications.

There is also another really successful blogger who started a blog about parrots when he found that there wasn’t enough information for parrot owners online. Today that is a thriving online business.

And there is also Rhonda Hetzel who started a blog about how she lives simply in her Sunshine Coast Hinterland Home in Australia. Now she is a best selling author and a local celebrity. You can read her blog at http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com.au

So you see, you can start a successful, money-making blog about almost any subject.

If it’s something that you know a lot about there is probably an audience for it.

But the real secret of successful blogging is getting it going and keeping it going CONSISTENTLY. Note the emphasis on the word “consistently.” It’s no good starting if you don’t keep going.

Just start and see how far it can take you.

You are a writer.

So write yourself a money-making blog.

3 Different Ways To Make Money Blogging

“Blog Media Showing Weblog Website” by Stuart Miles
I’ve been asked many times about making money online as a writer.

My advice depends on each individual writer’s situation and goals.

Usually I say that if you want to earn money from your writing quickly, then freelancing is the way to go.

But what if you don’t want to write for other people and instead you want to write for yourself and earn money from your blog or website?

Well, if that’s the case, then there are 3 simple, easy and free ways to earn money from blogging.

1. Advertising. This simply means writing lots of blog posts or articles and surrounding them with PPC ads or paid ads. To earn money writing this way it would mean doing adequate research to make sure you’re using the correct keywords (to get enough traffic to your site) and to make sure your posts and/or articles are useful and informative so that people will want to read them. (Listen to an old - 2008 - but fascinating interview of Captain Tim Gorman who began blogging using nothing but PPC advertising on his sites and built a hugely profitable online business from it. )

2. Affiliate Marketing. To make money selling affiliate products means finding quality products that you can sell for commission and writing blog post or articles that help sell them.

3. Books. Naturally the best way to earn money writing is by selling your own books and ebooks. And these days, Amazon’s Kindle Publishing Platform (kdp.amazon.com) makes it so quick and easy to publish your books as ebooks and physical books, with no upfront cost to you. Then you can write articles or blog posts to really help sell them.

So, in a nutshell, these are the 3 easiest and simplest ways to earn money writing for your own blog or website.

Of course, you need to market it well to make sure you get enough visitors to your site, but that’s a whole other topic for another day.

But you can start today by keeping it simple just so that you can get it going.

And eventually, you’ll be able to work online from anywhere and live your own Laptop Lifestyle.

Crucial Writing Advice

“Hands Tearing Apart A Banknote” by Sira Anamwong
Lately I’ve received a few emails from people giving me their opinion on my blog posts.

But let me get one thing straight first -

My advice about how to earn money from your writing (which is what ALL my posts are about) are only aimed at one group of people - those who are serious about wanting to earn money from their writing AND who aren’t afraid to do the necessary work.

Yet the emails I’ve been receiving are from people who don’t actually want to write.

Instead it seems they only want to read about making money from writing and that somehow money will magically appear in their bank accounts.

They say they don’t have time to write.

Don't have the skills.

Don’t know how to start.

Don’t know how to keep going.

Or they’re just too busy doing other more important things.

So let’s get a few things right about this subject.

Earning money from writing means:

  • Writing every day.

  • Publishing/submitting everything you write.

  • Actually wanting to write.

  • Buying any books/resources necessary to help you.

All the advice I give is crucial if you want to be a money-earning writer.

So don’t let this fall of deaf ears.

You must be reading this because you want to earn money from your writing.

So do yourself a favour and write and publish/submit something today.

Then think about what you’ll write, publish/submit tomorrow.

Once you make a determined start it’s easy to keep going.

Make today the day you stop wasting time and start writing more.

New Year Writing Resolutions

“Two Thousand And Seventeen On Laptop Shows New Years Resolution” by Stuart Miles
Now that we’ve entered a New Year many people are working on their New Year writing resolutions.

I know they are because I’ve been selling more writing ebooks than usual recently.

And from all the talk online it seems that most writers are trying to earn more money from their writing this year, and some even have a set amount they’re working towards.

I have done the same thing many times.

But the problem is that you can’t actually be sure of how much money you’re going to earn.

So what I do is have an idea of how much I want to earn and then I look at how I’m going to do it.

- What books am I going to write?

- How will I market them?

- How many blog posts will I write?

- How will I increase my blog and website traffic?

- What am I going to do to get more subscribers?

These are the things I can control. It’s up to me how much I write and how I market things. But I have no real control over my exact income.

So I make a plan of what I’m going to do and I stick to it.

And then the following year I look back over what I did, what worked and what didn’t and then I make a new plan to do even better next year.

Making plans for things that I can control (like writing) works better than making plans for things I can’t control (like exact income amounts).

And as long as I’m working my plan, I’m moving forward towards my financial goal.

How about you?

What are your writing and marketing plans for the next 12 months?

What will you be doing differently and doing more of?

How to Earn Money Online Before You Go To Bed Tonight

“Businesswoman Is Thinking About Bonus Money” by iosphere
If you want to earn money from everything you write, then there MUST be a way for you to be able to do that.

What I mean is that if you write a blog post, how will you earn money from it?

One of the easiest and quickest ways is through PPC advertising.

But for this to work well, your blog posts need to be as Search Engine Optimised as possible.

This means that what you write needs to be not only helpful to your readers, but it needs to contain the correct keywords so that the ads displayed on your blog page are appropriate for your readers too.

PPC ads work on algorithms so the software needs to know what your articles are about, so a quick bit of keyword research can make a huge difference.

And the right content with the best keywords can easily result in people clicking on your ads straight away.

And you may think that earning a dollar or two a day for clicks on your ads isn’t much, but once you have a hundred or more pages of content online, each containing several ads, the revenue can surprise you.

There are writers who do this for a living.

They never waste time writing something that doesn’t have an opportunity for them to earn money.

The first time I ever put PPC ads on my website, I earned money from them the same day.

And this is only one small way to earn money as an online writer.

3 Ways to Earn Money From 5 Minutes Writing

Quick Cash Writing
Making money from writing doesn’t have to take a long time. You don’t have to sit and write a whole book.

When I first started out trying to earn money from my writing, I tried smaller projects, ones that only took 5 minutes to write.

Not only were they quick to do but they paid faster as well.

The 3 easiest five-minute projects (IMHO) are:

  1. Jokes. Some magazines, like Readers’ Digest, regularly publish jokes. And best of all they pay really well - up to $100 per joke.

  2. Movie Pitches. If you have a great idea for a movie but don’t know how to write a script, you can pitch your idea to movie producers. Most companies option ideas for up to $100K or more.

  3. Readers’ Letters. Magazines and other publications love to fill up space with readers’ letters, with some of these only being one for two sentences. Yet they pay up to $100 - or sometimes more. You can even receive prizes too if yours is the ‘Letter of the Week.’

So go to your local library and browse the magazines or do it at your local newsagent store.

You’ll be surprised just how many magazines there are and how many writing opportunities they contain.

How Much Money Can You Earn From Your Writing in a Year?

How much money do writers earn?
How can I earn money as a writer?
How much money can I make as a writer?

These are questions that I get asked all the time.

And do you want to know the answer?

It all depends on one thing - YOU.

It depends on how well you write, what you write and how much you write.

So someone who writes useless blog posts once a month isn’t going to make as much  money as someone who writes in depth, weekly blog posts that get read by hundreds of thousands of followers.

But now is the best time to become the successful writer you’ve always wanted to be - as long as you’re prepared to work at it.

This is the time of year when everyone is thinking about plans for the New Year.

And you can do it too by making a 12 month writing plan and thinking about these 3 things:

How much can you realistically write in 12 months? You’ll be surprised just how much is possible. for instance, writing for just one or two hours a day is enough to write a 50,000 word book a month.

What will you write? do you want to write ebooks? Novels? Or do you want to be a blogger? A scriptwriter? A copywriter?

How much will you need to write to earn enough money? This is where it becomes a bit of a guessing game, but it is possible to come up with a winning strategy of how much money you need to earn plus how you’re going to do it (it’s math, people).

In the end we’re all different so you need to come up with your own writing plan.

But the advice I can give you is that you shouldn’t wait till next year.

Make your plan now and start writing.

Don’t wait till the New Year.

Writing Forums. Helpful or Not?

“Forums Sphere Definition Displays Online Discussion Or Global Co…” by Stuart Miles
Lately I’ve been taking somewhat of an interest in writing forums.

Why?

Because they’re regularly touted as one of the best places for writers to hang out and learn their craft.

Many years ago, while I was quite new to being a writer (but I was already earning a decent income from it), I joined a couple of writing forums.

What I found was that most of the people on these forums weren’t writers at all.

Most were wannabes who had never (and probably never would) write anything publishable at all.

Quite a few others were just trolls.

It only took me a few weeks to realise what was going on and get the hell out of there.

But lately I wondered if anything had changed.

So I took a look around and scanned through a few forums looking at the threads and all the responses.

And you know what?

Nothing had changed.

No matter where I looked, each forum was dominated by people either responding to questions with useless advice because they weren’t professional writers and so had no clue what they were talking about, or they were nasty trolls just hanging around trying to upset people.

But do you know what amazed me the most?

It was how much time these people were spending on these forums.

It seemed that they spent hours every day posting new topics, answering questions, and getting into arguments.

There were even people who seemed to be on the forums 24/7 and had tens of thousands of posts and comments and thousands of followers.

One poster actually had well over 67,000 posts that he’d uploaded over his 10 year membership which averaged out at over 18 posts a day. Imagine that! Posting 18 times a day - or more -  to the same forum for 10 years.

And the funny thing about all this was that the threads that received the most responses were the ones where people were asking about how to earn money from writing.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

I found this hilarious because how can anyone who spends most of their time on free forums dishing out advice about how to make money from writing, actually have the time to make money from writing?

The irony just has me in stitches because let’s face it, anyone making money from writing is writing and getting their work published, not hanging around writing forums. Have you ever heard a successful writer saying how they spent hours and hours every day on writing forums and it helped get them to where they are today?

No doubt there will be some who think that writing forums are great and that’s why they’re always on them. But it’s also the reason why they’re not successful writers.

Successful writers are busy writing.

My advice to anyone who wants to earn money from their writing is to “Just Do It,” as the Nike slogan says.

Writing time is best spent writing and if you don’t know where to start or what to write next, try a writing course like Quick Cash Writing that gets you earning money from your writing  fast.

Or look at my Writing Markets page for new places for writing submissions.

Or how about downloading How to Write Any Book in 28 Days or Less so that you can get to work straight away writing your next best seller.

Writing is work, not a hobby.

No writing = no publishing = no money.

So don’t spend your time hanging out on forums all day.

Find a way to start work quickly and get down to some serious writing.

Just Do It.

3 Reasons I Sell More Books With Email

Selling books can sometimes be harder than writing them.

I love to sit and write books, to be 100% focused on my work and write thousands of words a day.

And as a novelist, Dean Wesley Smith so eloquenty put it, "Sitting alone in a room and making shit up isn't work. Sorry. It's play."

But after the writing comes the marketing.

And because I'm a writer, marketing my books by writing emails, isn't difficult.

All it takes is more writing.

But why email?

There are other ways like online marketing, social media and press releases (just to name a few), and these should all be done too.

But email marketing is more personal because you're writing to people who already know you.

And email heps me to do 3 other things.

1. I can announce that my books before I even finish writing them.

2. Announcing books early gathers interested readers long before publication.

3. Books sales are immediate because people are already waiting to buy them.

If you're serious about making money from writing books, using email can not only hlep increase sales, but help you to get more sales faster.

Readers want to know when your next book is going to be published, and email can help.

You can read my latest article about How to Sell More Books With Email over at my website.

Earning Money As A Writer

"How much money do writers earn?"

This is a question I get asked a lot.

And I always give the same answer. "I don't know. How much do you earn?"

It's funny how people don't care about asking me how much I earn but don't want to talk about their own income. Hmmm...

Anyway, I can't answer that question even if I wanted to because different writers earn different amounts of income.

When I first quit my job to write full time I was a bit worried about tax and other income related things and I had to get an accountant - and pay her!

This was scary at first because I didn't understand all the tax laws but it turned out that I didn't have to because that is what I pay my accountant for.

But when I first started writing I didn't worry about the money side of it because I was still working at my job.

It wasn't until I quit working that I went to see an accountant who explained everything to me.

All I had to do was keep an Excel spreadsheet of my income from all my different books and other sources, and of all my expenditures, and she did the rest.

At first, it's scary because writing income isn't regular.

But it does arrive in my bank account several times a month and I've learnt not think that I can spend a lot of money just because I earned it.

I have to make it last because the amounts can be so different.

And earning money as a writer means that I have to write every day, 5 days a week, and sometimes more.

But it's worth it.

And even though the money isn't as steady as having an income from a paid job, I do get regular payments every month from places like Amazon.

So I guess in a way it is a steady income.

But I still don't know how much money other writers make.

So don't ask me.

You Won't Make Money From Writing If You Don't Get On With It

Living The Laptop Lifestyle: How To Start & Grow A Profitable Online Business So You Can Quit Your Job
One of the questions I get asked the most is how do I earn money from writing?

And I keep giving the same answer.

I write.

You see that's the big secret about a writing income. You have to actually do the writing. Not just once or twice. But all the time. Every day.

But there are some people who don't have a clue where to start. And so they don't.

There are others who have a multitude of excuses as to why they can't earn money from writing - no time (always the favourite), have kids, have a job, far too busy already, don't have any spare time to write, and on and on it goes.

I say, go tell your excuses to Stephen Hawking style=and see how much sympathy HE has for you. He writes books all the time despite his inability to move. So what's your excuse for not writing?

How and Where to Start

Asking the right questions can help you get started because it helps to know what you want so that you can figure out how to get it.

So if you're not writing enough, or your not writing at all, ask yourself these 3 questions:

Making Money From Writing Fast

“Speedy Typing With Keyboard” by adams - earn money from your writing fast
Lately I've been delving into a bit of freelance writing for magazines.

I went to the local library, looked through a few magazines and found places to submit short fiction and article ideas (magazines usually only want an article outline to begin with but they want the complete fiction story upfront).

And I'd forgotten how much fun this can be. Browsing magazine articles and stories, looking up their submission guidelines online (gotta get it right or they're not interested), looking at what they're currently looking for and then planning my submission attack.

It was entertaining to see the  letters to the editor, for which some of the magazines pay quite a high price and some even offer a prize for each letter published and the prizes are worth several hundred dollars each.

I love sending in small letters like that (some as small as just a few words) because they pay so much for so little. There was one magazine that paid $100 for an amusing short submission and $150 if you included a photo. Yay!

I also found magazines looking for short tips and small articles of less than 500 words.

These are the types of freelance writing gigs that can pay out fast, and for not much work.

Another thing that's handy to do is look at how often the magazines are published. The weekly ones need much more content than their quarterly cousins. And they usually want less substantial information in their articles too which makes writing them so much easier and quicker.

Unlike book writing, freelance writing doesn't bring in an ongoing, passive income. But it is nice to have a cash boost (or several cash boosts depending on how many items you submit your work).

What I usually recommend if you want to earn money this way is to try and make 30 submissions in 30 days. You can then wait 30 days to see if you get any "bites" because if you do, you'll need the time to write the articles that the editors are interested in. But during the 30 days, you can be looking for more markets for your next 30 submissions.

If you want to find freelance writing markets, I have a whole list you can browse for free at http://writeaholics.net/writingmarkets.html.

You can also use the Writers & Artists Year Book to find thousands of writing markets. You can buy the book or read it at your local library.  It's usually in the reference section so you can't borrow it, or at least that's how it is at my library. It's such a thick book and contains a huge amount of markets, and it's all categorised so you can quickly search for whatever area of expertise you're in.

It also contains articles and how-to guidance on writing for newspapers, magazines, scripts for film, radio and TV, plus advice on writing and submitting plays, poetry, non-fiction and fiction of all genres. It's a book I usually buy every year because it's really worth the investment.

I am also a member of American Consumer Opinion website where I get paid to take surveys (you don't have to live in the USA to join). Not all of these survey companies are legitimate but so far (and I've been associated with them for several years now) this one is. You can also get asked to "test-drive" products for them too.

So if you're feeling inspired to write and you want to earn a bit of "quick cash" from your writing, freelance writing for magazines (and filling out surveys) may be just what you need.

I find that once I start looking, it really motivates me to write and start submitting.

And I hope it works that way for you too.
