Why I've Been So Slack At Writing

It's now January 2019.

Last year (and the year before that if I'm completely honest) I didn't do much writing at all. At least not compared to how much I usually do.

There were multiple reasons including being continually harassed and threatened with legal action for months on end by Loren Piel, my father being ill for a year and then passing away, the deaths of two other family members, my daughter and her fiance moving and needing our help with setting up their first house, dealing with builders and the huge renovations being done at our house that has been going on for the last 2 years (that only finished less than two weeks ago and we're really not satisfied with their work so they'll have to come back) and my husband taking early retirement two years ago which completely threw my daily/weekly routine into chaos for a while as he settled into his new life at home and as we both tried to deal with builders, electricians, painters, plumbers, architects, engineers and building certifiers.

So, all in all, it's been pretty chaotic around here.

Oh, and another thing, we have a family that has come to rent our apartment/granny-flat downstairs for a couple of months, so we have been preparing that too as it had no furniture or kitchen equipment or anything so we've had to go and buy and organise that at the same time, including making curtains because the windows are odd sizes so we couldn't buy them off-the-shelf.

Anyhoo...as you can imagine, it's all been taking a toll on my time and attention.

Although, through it all, I did manage to publish my latest romance novel, Two Weeks In Corfu, which is now available online and can also be ordered through any bookshop/library because it is sold and distributed by Ingram, which is one of the world's biggest book distribution companies.

But now I feel like I'm finally back in the driver's seat of my time and attention.

And I've been looking at my website stats and it seems that even though I cancelled my email account last year and haven't been sending out any email updates or offers, the number of my website visitors has increased, which is really surprising - and pleasing.

So I've been busy making plans for what I'm going to be working on this year and my plans include several new books that will be available in paperback as well as being ebooks.

Plus I'll be updating my websites regularly and having many more great offers to help you write more and earn more.

I may even restart my email updates to really revamp my writing and publishing efforts.

My Website For Writers is More Popular Than Ever

I've been running a website for writers for well over a decade now.

At first, I had a site that was a bit of a hit and miss with design and content because I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing, but it was still popular.

Then I created a better site for writers that was really popular and I received thousands of signups for my newsletter.

Then I sold that website but kept my email list and began a new website for writers which I still have at https://ruthiswriting.com.

But a few months ago I retired my email list to concentrate on my writing more, but as it turned out, I've spent more time working on our house renovations.

It's been a really busy time here with so much to do including buying new furniture and fittings, small renovations jobs we've had to do ourselves, making curtains, and having so many builders here, all with questions when building things don't go according to plan, which it turns out, happens often.

So I've been sucked away with dealing with everything going on here including having a family member in hospital for a few weeks and my husband having shingles.

But through it all I've still been writing (but not as much as I've wanted to), sorting out a new distribution channel for my books, and also keeping an eye on my websites.

And what I found that was surprising is that my RuthIsWriting.com website has become more popular than ever with far more page views than ever before.

I had thought about retiring that website but now I'm having second thoughts.

So what I'm going to do is revive it in the New Year and write regular writing articles and also allow guest articles from other great writers.

I may even start another email list so that everyone can follow what I'm doing and learn even more ways to earn money from writing.

So watch this space.

The "Yoda" Way to Write More and Earn More

"Do or do not. There is no try."

If you want to earn more money from your writing (and don't we all), the 'so-easy-you'll-kick-yourself' thing to do is eliminate one 3-letter word from your vocabulary.

And that word is 'try.'

When you want to get a writing project done, don't say you're going to try and finish it.

Instead, replace "I'll try to get this writing done" with "I'm going to get this writing done."

And then just sit down and do it.

No excuses.

Saying you're going to try and get something done means you're already seeing yourself NOT doing it.

It's like when someone says "I'll try and make it to the party tonight," which really means they're not going to make it at all. And we all know that.

And it's the same when you say you're going to try and get more writing done or try and get a project finished. As soon as you use the word 'try' you're already defeated.

So starting today, remove the word 'try' when you're talking about getting things done.

As the wise Yoda said to Luke Skywalker in the movie Star Wars, "There is no try."

So tell yourself you'll do it and you will.

But tell yourself you'll try, and you won't.

Now...sit down and write.
