How to Be a More Productive Writer

People often think that there is some big secret to writing more and being a more productive writer.

But the real secret, is that there is no secret.

All it takes is for you to be able to sit down and write and not let yourself become distracted.

You need to cultivate zen-like focus on what you're writing instead of trying to write while you're thinking about picking the kids up from school later or worrying that you haven't made your latest car payment.

If you read online about successful and prolific writers, the one underlying trait they all share is that they have incredible focus.

And it's not just focus on what they're writing.

They also have focus in all areas of their life and that's why they tend to be high achievers in just about everything they do.

I've often heard it said (or seen it written) that in order to be able to cope with the big things in life, you need to start with the little things.

And believe it or not, the little things can be something as simple as putting your socks straight into the laundry hamper instead of throwing them on the floor.

In other words, if you're too lazy to walk a few steps to the laundry basket every time you take your socks off, which takes only a few seconds to do, then how are you going to cope with the big things like sitting down and writing for hours?

And that's the real 'secret' to being a productive writer is to apply copious amounts of backside to chair and get your writing done.

There really is no other way to become a prolific writer. In other words, you need to keep on writing.

No one makes a fortune out of writing just one book. And no one makes a fortune out of creating a small blog or writing only a few articles.

But thousands of people do make a fortune from writing dozens of books, creating huge blogs with hundreds of pages and from writing several articles a day/week. So you need to write much more than you already do if you're not getting the results you want.

You might argue that writers like J K Rowling got a movie deal for her first novel and so didn't have to write dozens of books to make money. But even though she only had one novel, she was already writing the next one in the series and had 7 novels planned in all.

So although she made money with just one novel, she had a huge plan in place and was already well on the way to writing the rest of the series. I doubt her novel would have been picked up for a movie, nor would she have gotten a publishing contract, had she not already got her 7-book plan in place.

And while being a more productive writer might sound like exactly the thing you need, the question remains, what can you do to be more productive without it taking more time?

If you search the web you'll find plenty of articles written by people who can write a lot in the same time that other people take to write just a small amount.

Why is this?

It all comes back to focus.

They start a writing project and stick to it to the end instead of surfing online and being distracted by the next shiny thing. Once they start something, they finish it.

And they always work with great focus and that is how they can achieve what seems like far more writing than other people seem capable of.

Take a look at these articles published by uber-productive writers:

  1. That's a great post. Working as a writer is hard, you have to manage deadlines and deal with a lot amount of stuff, especially if you working from home. I'm a freelance writers myself, i'm working for a vip-writers company and write a lot on academic-reletad topics. Sometimes you have to deal with a writers block, but you need to remember, that you are improving your skill with everyday that you write.
