Where to Find Unlimited Ideas For Writing Fiction

“Book Forming Bar Graph” by ddpavumba
Writing fiction is fun. It’s much more fun than writing non-fiction.

And with fast digital publishing available, it’s possible to sit and write fiction novels every day and publish them in minutes.

In fact there are many fiction authors who can write and publish one or two novels every week.

But sometimes it can be hard to find enough ideas.

If this is a problem for you, here are three things you can do to have a never-ending supply of great  ideas for your novels.

  1. Visit the Library. Just go and browse a few books in the genre that you want to write. Read the blurb on the back cover and flip through a few pages to get a feel for the style of writing and the flow of ideas. Then, whatever the plot idea of the book, come up with an even better one. Sometimes just looking at a book cover can spark a great idea

  2. Browse Second-Hand Books. Charity shops are usually filled with cheap novels that no-one wanted to read twice. Buy one, read it, and improve on the story idea. Come up with a much better plot and turn it into a best seller.

  3. Window Shop On Amazon. This is a great website for coming up with plot ideas. On Amazon you can read book blurbs plus use the “look inside” feature to get better book ideas. Amazon will also show you similar books as you browse, which helps you to keep on looking.

These are 3 easy to use ways to find ideas for your next great novel.

But…there’s one caveat. DON’T PLAGIARISE!

It’s perfectly fine to use someone else’s book to help you to come up with your own ideas, but don’t steal their work.

Everything you write and your ideas must be your own.

Just start looking and browsing and write down all the great ideas that spark in your mind.

And if you keep browsing and keep looking you should never run out of ideas ever again.

How to Control Your Writing Income

“Hand Pressing Enter Icon For Money” by samuiblue
One of the problems with being a writer is that you can never be sure of your income.

When you’re employed you receive a regular weekly or monthly income, but being a writer is so different to that.

Every year I start out with goals of how much money I want to earn from my writing and then I have to figure out how I’m going to do it.

Some things I do are successful and I can hit my income target, and other things turn out not so great or maybe even just mediocre.

Then I read a really fascinating article written by freelance writer, Mridu Khullar Relph at http://www.mridukhullar.com/setting-yearly-goals called “Setting Yearly Goals…In November.”

In this article she talks about how it’s not possible to always hit yearly financial goals, because writers don't have complete control over that.

But we can hit yearly writing goals, or as Mridu calls it, production goals.

She then sets down what her writing goals are (books, blog posts, freelance writing work, etc), breaks it down into how much writing she needs to do to achieve it, and then divides it by how many writing days she has in a year (365 days minus 2 weeks holiday, minus 2 weeks sick days minus weekends, etc) and from there gets a really “do-able” daily word count.

It’s great to read how she breaks it all down and shows you that you don’t need to work full-time to earn a full-time income as a writer.

My Top Ten Writing Resources

I often receive emails from writers asking me what resources they can use to help them make money from their writing.

I always steer them towards the products I’ve used along the way to help me get to where I am now - a full time writer.

So I thought that it might be time that I list my favourite writing resources for everyone.

These 10 resources (I have many more) are ones that I’ve used myself and highly recommend.

These are writing courses and ebooks, all of which I’ve used and read over and over again.

So if you’ve ever been on the fence about buying a writing product, I hope this short list will help you to finally make that jump from someone who dreams about being a successful writer to someone who is earning an amazing income from their writing.

Will It Fly?

Will It Fly by Pat Flynn
I recently listened to a podcast of online author and marketer, Pay Flynn being interviewed about his latest book, "Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don't Waste Your Time and Money ?"

This is a book all about thinking carefully before you launch a business as to whether it will fly (succeed) or not (fail).

He likens this to finding out if the wind direction is right before you fly a kite. If all the weather conditions aren't right, the kite won't fly.

He uses real-world case studies with anecdotes from his personal experience of making money online, hosting successful podcasts, testing niche sites, and launching several online businesses.

But anyway, this is not about Pat Flynn's new book, but about how much testing to do before you launch a business.

Which got me thinking about how much testing to do before you launch a product, i.e, write a book.

If you're going to spend a year or two writing a book, then you need to do a lot of research first if you want to earn enough money from book sales to cover all the time it took you to write it.

Publishing companies usually expect a book to make at least 40,000 sales a year to be considered worth keeping published.

For self published authors, these figures don't have to be so high, because you can publish a book online in minutes and get then get on with writing your next book.

And if you can write your books fast, then your ROI (Return On Investment) doesn't need to be high for you to be able to earn an income from your writing.

But don't get me wrong. When I say fast writing I don't mean bad writing. I mean writing quickly and not letting your conscious mind interfere and start criticising what you're writing. Just write in one focused window of inspiration. You'll find that you not only write faster, but better.

Take look at these numbers of book sales to see what I mean about income.

If you spend a year writing a book, then you'd need to earn money quickly from your sales to pay you for the time you've spent writing. It also means that you'll only be publishing one book every year so you still need to sell a heck of a lot of copies of that one book to earn enough money to live on.

But if you wrote a book and published it in just one week (which is SO do-able you won't believe it till you try it), then if you sell it as a $20 ebook and only make 100 sales a week, that's still a weekly income of $2,000. PLUS you'll still be getting income from other ebooks you've written and published.

This is why writing books quickly (instead of sitting around waiting for your muse to show up), is far more profitable.

Not only that but you'll feel great for working so hard and producing so much.

Which will only spur you on to do more.

So instead of sitting around and wondering if your ebook will sell or not, as long as there's already a market for your book, you WILL make sales.

Just know who your customers are and where they hang out online and then write books that they want to read.

Spending less time wondering and more time writing, can give you a much greater ROI, than thinking about whether or not your idea will fly.

Just throw it into the wind and see what happens.

If sales aren't that great and you only sell a few hundred copies, if it only took you a week to write it it's still a great hourly rate.

So don't get it right. Get it written.

And let it fly.

How to Start an Online Business Simply and Free

There are many people who now have blogs and earn income from them.

Many also earn all their income from their blogs or websites.

Earning money online is a dream come true for a lot of people yet few seem to actually do it.

So what holds people back?

It's usually fear. Either fear of failing or even, fear of succeeding.

So what's the simplest way to set up a blog?

And how can you do it for free?

And how can you make money from it?

Setting up a money-making blog or website

If you want to set up your own online business, don't try to get it right. Just get it going.

Trying to be perfect will prevent you from getting out of the proverbial starting gate.

My first ever website for writers was terrible. I don't know how I made money from it but I did.

On reflection, I think that the only reason I made money was because I got the website going. I didn't procrastinate, I just wanted to do it. So I found out how and just did it.

Writers need websites (or blogs) as a place to sell their books. Having a website and being able to use it to market your books really helps. It's also a place where you can earn a residual income while you write.

So if you want to get started, do it now. Don't wait for a better time (there's no such thing) or wait till you can get it perfect. Just get it going.

If you want to do it for free,  that's OK too. This blog that you're reading is a free blog from Google. It's called Blogger.

Many popular website are run on Blogger including Down to Earth and Zero Waste Home (ZWH has its own domain name but it is still run on Blogger which you can see at the bottom). The owner of the Down To Earth blog is now an author of several books and was offered several book deals after a publishing company saw her blog and liked her style of writing.

Just Google Blogger to get going now and you can have your blog up and running in minutes. It's the easiest free blogging software I've ever found.

And if you want to publish your books quickly then set up a publishing account with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing at http://kdp.amazon.com. It's free and you can sell your ebooks all over the world through every Amazon website.

You can also use Amazon's free print publishing service called Create Space. Your book files are uploaded to the Amazon website and printed and shipped when ordered.

Just keep everything simple when you get started online and you can grow your writing and publishing business from there.

Just remember that you don't have to get it right, you just have to get it going.

And after that, anything can (and will) happen.

How to Write Fast and Earn More Money From Your Writing

Writing fast is really fun and extremely productive.

There are some that will tell you to take your time and be really creative. “Enjoy the process” is what they tell you, but to me it’s a mantra for failure, because you won’t enjoy things that take too long to do.

Making goals happen fast is a lot more fun and more profitable.

Read the article here.
