Simple Advice To Write More and Earn More

A few days ago I was listening to an audio recording of a conversation with top copywriter, Bob Bly. http://www.justaddhustle.com/session1/.

Bob has been a copywriter most of his working life.

He works from an office he rents instead of working from home because he finds he gets more done this way.

Many copywriters have 'copy cubs' working for them but Bob never has because he prefers to do all his writing himself so that if anyone hires him to do their copy for them, they can be sure that it is actually Bob that will work for them and not a hired cub.

And one of the things he said in this audio really struck me as not only sage advice but also so simple that most people miss it.

He was asked about how much money he earns from his copywriting and how he manages to earn it consistently because Bob is one of the most highest-earning copywriters on the planet.

And his answer was simple. He said, (and I paraphrase because I can't remember his exact words) "I work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. And when you work that much you have to earn a lot of money."

It made me nod my head in agreement because so often I get asked about earning money from writing because so many people never seem to be able to do it.

And when I delve deeper into the problem, it almost always turns out that they're not really doing much writing.

Their ideal is to write for a few hours every day.

But in reality, they're not writing very much even in a week let alone writing every day. It's also surprising (or perhaps not) how many people sit down at their computer every day, but instead of writing, they goof off on Facebook or forums or just idly surf the net jumping from one website to the next.

So the real 'secret' to earning a lot of money from writing is to do what Bob Bly does and do a lot of writing.

How much money could you earn if you were working 12 hours a day? And I mean actually doing writing instead of being distracted by other things.

I know I could quite easily knock my earnings out of the park (so to speak) if I kept those kinds of writing hours.

But I do work several hours a day and that is how I keep my writing income as consistent as I possibly can.

How about you?

The 'Secret' To Selling More Books

So you've written a book.

So what?

Who cares?

No one if you don't tell them about it.

But it's not enough to tell people that you've written a book.

You have to make them want to buy it.

But how do you do that?

It's not enough to just advertise your book and say "come and get it."

The 'secret' is to use emotion.

No one buys things they don't need without emotion.

You need to make them lust after your book.

So first you need to know who your market is.

And then you have to market directly to them.

Use the words in your sales page that they want to hear so that they "just have to buy it."

A good sales page can convince someone to buy your book even though they didn't even know they wanted to. But once they read your sales copy, they can't NOT buy your book.

The best way to learn how to do this is from the masters. The great copywriters.

And they learn everything they know from copywriters who've gone before them and they study marketing and learn everything they can to make their customers buy their products, even if they didn't want to buy them before.

They say that you can sell a mediocre product with great marketing, but you can't sell a great product with mediocre marketing.

So learn all you can about marketing with emotion.

Done correctly, it can rapidly multiply your sales.

Wouldn't you rather sell thousands of copies of every book you write instead of just a few dozen?

The Mind Of A Great Copywriter

I've been talking a lot lately about swipefiles and how useful they can be.

But, if you do it right, you can use a swipefile to get inside the mind of great copywriters to not only see how they put their million-dollar ads together, but to understand the psychology of what they're doing.

You see, swipefiles aren't meant to be for actually swiping (stealing) the work of copywriters.

The way to get the most out of them is to take a really deep look into how they construct a sales page.

If you look deeply enough you can see how well they know their market and what emotion they're targeting.

They could be targeting jealousy, greed, lust, guilt, pride, or perhaps they're targeting self-esteem or trying to elicit joy or excitement.

Whatever it is, if you study the ads in a swipefile, you'll not only see the emotion they're aiming for, but you'll be able to see how they use it to manipulate the reader to make them want to buy.

Once you really see what they're doing it can be a real "Aha!" moment.

All ads manipulate. That's their job.

Copywriters know this and they look at all the features in the product they're writing about and turn them into desirable benefits that their target market can't resist.

And if you're writing a sales page for a book you've written, it should be easier for you because you know your own product better than any copywriter.

How to Use a Swipe File

Swipe files can really help to take a sales letter from good to a money-making machine.

I find writing sales letters hard. I'm not that savvy when it comes to writing sales copy.

So I use swipe files.

It's like opening up a file and finding millions of dollars of the best copy to look through and borrow ideas from.

Sometimes I don't have a clue what to write.

So I just open up one of my swipe files and before I know it I've gone from writer's block to idea overload.

I only use swipefiles from the best copywriters so that I know they really know how to sell. And having their swipefile to read through is like finding gold.

I can look through ideas for headings, openings, bullets, stories and closes. Plus there are plenty of ideas for guarantees and huge lists of the right words to use.

Writing a book is one thing, but knowing how to sell it is what makes the difference between hundreds/thousands of sales and no sales.

That's why I'm a regular student of marketing. To make sure that once I write a book, I can sell thousands of copies.

And my collection of swipefiles are all I need to get me started.

I just take out the files and start working my way through them and before I know it I'm inundated with ideas.

If you don't already own a swipefile, it's worth looking into.

But only buy one from a top copywriter who knows how to make money writing sales pages.

Writing With Confidence

No matter what you do for a living, having confidence is important for many reasons, but mostly it's because no one wants to do business with someone who lacks confidence in themselves, or in what they're selling.

And it's just as important if what you are selling is your writing.

If you lack confidence, it will show in your writing and in all your communications.

I often get emails from people offering me their publishing/proof-reading/graphic services and I delete them simply because the person comes across as simpering or desperate or unknowledgeable.

Instead I prefer to hear from someone who is sure about what they are trying to sell and know their product well. It makes me feel safe to do business with them.

So when you're writing, have confidence in what you're saying. Not only will it make your writing stronger and give the reader confidence in what you're saying, but it also makes you come across as really intelligent.

But how do you get the confidence you need?

There's a popular saying, "fake it till you make it."

Best selling author Joe Vitale calls it Nevillizing.

The term comes from his book The Attractor Factor: 5 Easy Steps for Creating Wealth (or Anything Else) From the Inside Out. He named this method  after Neville Goddard, a very inspiring self-help author, and chapter 4 of this book (it's one of my favourite books) is all about how to Nevillize.

Nevillizing uses creative visualization for attracting anything that you want in your life. It uses vivid images to create a virtual reality of living the end result of anything that you want to achieve.

Nevillizing means living the emotions of already being who/where you want to be.

So if you want to be a best selling author, imagine yourself as having already sold a million copies of your books.

How confident would you be writing a blog post if you'd already achieved your writing and publishing dream of being a millionaire author?

THAT'S the confidence you need to write with.

And the time to start doing it is now.
