How to Start Writing a Novel Quickly

I recently publsihed my latest novel, Two Weeks In Corfu, and it feels like a great achievement.

And today I've been busy catching up on some freelance work before I dive into my next book.

And it occured to me how many people ask me about how to start writing a book, especially a novel, which most people believe is already in them and just waiting to burst out (yeah, yeah, we all hear about that all the time).

But for the serious writer, beginning a novel can seem daunting.

Yet the reality is simple.

You just start with one idea.

That's it.

Just one short sentence is all you need, like, "Aliens land on earth and want to set up their own colonies."

Then from there, you simply expand that one idea and flesh it out until it becomes your next best seller.

You see, the mistake most people make when they think about starting to write a novel, they think they have to know the whole plot line at once.

But that's not true.

You just start with an one idea and flesh out the whole story from there, piece by piece till you have your whole outline.

And you don't even have to know how it will all happen.

You only have to know what will happen.

And as you work, it all comes together effortlessly.

So to begin with, all you have to do is begin.

The Math Of Earning an Income From Writing & Publishing Books

So...the other day I was thinking about earning money from writing books.

I was thinking about it because I'm about to embark on using a new distribution and POD channel for my books and ebooks.

And it got me to thinking about earning a full-time income from writing and publishing books which is what I get asked about a lot.

So here is the math that I was thinking about:

If you write and publish books and ebooks and earn $2 royalty for each copy sold, then to earn a decent income, which in my humble yet extremely accurate opinion is $100,000, you'd have to sell a lot of books.

So a $2 royalty per book/ebook means that you'd have to sell 50,000 copies of your book every year which is about 4,167 copies per month.

Hmmm...that's a lot.

But look at it another way.

If you've written 50 book/ebooks and you earn $2 per copy, then you'd only need to sell 1,000 copies of EACH book per year which is around a mere 83 copies of each book every month.

So isn't it a lot more do-able to sell 83 copies of a book every month instead of 4,167?

Not only that but if you've written and published 50 books and someone reads one of your books and likes it, chances are that they'll buy more books from you.

But if you have only one book to sell, once someone reads it, you have nothing more to offer them so you have to find new customers.

Of course, there is another way to look at it and that is to consider earning more than $2 per copy sold.

You could always charge more for your books and earn $5 per copy which would mean that to earn $100,000, if you've written 50 books you only need to sell 400 copies of each book every year which is about 33 copies a month of each book.

But to charge more, you have to write really good books that hook your reader in so that they not only want to keep reading the book they already have, but it also makes them want to read more of your books.

Selling 33 copies of each book every month shouldn't be too hard, especially if you've got 49 more books to offer.

But first, you have to write and publish 50 books or ebooks.

Which is why I always try and tell people to write quickly.

Don't get it right, get it written.

You can always go back later and edit your work. But you can't edit a blank page.

You just start by having a really good system for writing and publishing fast.

Time is Really All We Have

We all talk about time and say things like "don't waste my time" or "I don't have time."

But have you ever thought that time is all we really have.

Our life is our time. So if someone or something is wasting our time, it's wasting our life.

That's why it's important to make the most of our time (our life).

So to be a successful writer means to find the time to write.

But it's all too easy to say that you don't have more time to write because of work and family commitments.

Naturally, there may be pockets of time somewhere that you can use to get more writing done.

But who wants to work every hour of every day, right?

The other alternative is to write more in the time you have.

Do you know that when J K Rowling wrote her second Harry Potter book she was a single mother and had a full-time job so her only spare time to write was her lunch hour which she spent at her computer writing. She guarded that one hour a day ferociously.

The 'trick' is to write faster.

It's well-known that writing faster usually means writing better because you don't have time to second-guess yourself and it also leaves no option for procrastinating. You just don't have time for it.

Author Rachel Aaron is best known for her book, 2k to 10k: Writing Faster, Writing Better, and Writing More of What You Love where she demonstrates how she increased her writing speed from 2,000 words an hour to 10,000 words an hour, which she had to do because she couldn't find more time to write so she had to write more.

You can read more about her amazing book at http://viewbook.at/2kto10k.

I've read it and I can tell you that it can really help you to increase your writing speed.

And like they say, I can write better when I'm writing faster because I don't have the time to worry about anything. I just have to keep writing.

I use a timer to keep me on track. I set it and see how much writing I can get done in the time that I've allowed myself, which is usually in repeated sessions of 33 minutes and 33 seconds as taught by the late, great copywriter, Eugene Schwartz.

It really helps me to make the best of the writing time that I have every day.

Writers Who Don't Write?

Believe it or not, I keep discovering writers who never write.

It seems incredible to me that there are people who say they are writers and ask me about how I earn money from my writing while they don't seem to be able to earn anything at all.

And when I dig a little deeper into why they aren't making any money from their writing, it's because their writing doesn't exist.

They simply never write anything.

They think about writing every single day.

But they do nothing about it. Except, of course, read about others earning money from their writing and wondering why it never happens to them.

I think the problem often stems from silly ads that can be seen everywhere online that show someone sitting on a beach doing nothing, or they're somewhere exotic sipping a glass of wine. And the ad will be all about working from home and being your own boss or earning money as a writer.

Those stupid kinds of ads really annoy me because it makes it look as though working from home, or writing for a living, means sitting around doing nothing all day long or being on a permanent holiday.

Yet the reality is that writing is work. No unpleasant work, but still work.

That's why so many give up because they didn't understand the reality of working as a writer.

The truth is that all successful writers write.

Stephen King writes every day for 90 minutes. He even writes when he's on holiday.

Top copywriter, Eugene Schwartz, used to write 3 to 4 hours every day, and he wrote 7 days a week.

And prolific novelist, Dean Wesley Smith, writes for hours every night from around 10pm or midnight and he writes until dawn (and then sleeps until lunchtime, but these hours suit him).

All writers work differently and at different hours of the day.

And all prolific writers are successful one way or the other.

But they all write.

They write every day.

And they all realised long ago that writing is a job, not a hobby.

So what are you going to do for the next 10 days?

How about writing and publishing an ebook?

A Full-Time Income Writing Short Articles

I was reading recently about a writer who earns $175/day writing blog posts.

She charges $35 per post of around 400 to 500 words. Her client pays for 5 daily posts (M-F) a week.

So she writes them in one day and submits them weekly.

On the other 4 working days of the week, she writes short articles for other clients.

With this regular work, she's earning a full-time income.

Not bad for writing a few short articles and blog posts every week.

But she couldn't do it if she didn't have a great writing system so that she can write articles quickly.

That's why I use my 15-minute article writing system that I teach in my ebook How To Write an Article in 15 Minutes or Less.

It also comes with two bonuses:
How to Write 1 Article in 7 Different Ways
and
10 Ways to Make Money Writing Articles.

It's for anyone who wants to earn money from writing articles either for paying clients or their own website or blog or for writing marketing articles.

And being able to write 1 article in 7 different ways gives you a week's worth of daily articles from just one idea.

And 10 different ways to earn money from them.

Not bad for 15 minute's work. :)

We All Understand Things In Different Ways

One morning recently, a young girl of about 9 or 10 years old, wearing a school uniform, stopped me in the street and anxiously asked me what time it was.

There was an even younger boy with her who kept repeating, "We've missed the bus! We've missed the bus!"

I looked at my watch and said, "It's ten to eight."

She looked confused and asked, "What time is that?"

I said, "It's ten minutes to 8 o'clock."

She then looked even more confused. "I don't understand what you mean."

"It's ten to eight."

She thought about it for a few seconds and then asked, "Is that like 7 something?"

I said, "Yes, it's 7.50."

She suddenly looked relieved and said to the young boy, "Come on. We haven't missed it yet," and off they both ran.

I was quite amused by it. She didn't know what 10 to 8 meant, but she did understand 7.50.

How were they teaching kids in school these days? Not very well if kids don't know what 10 minutes to 8 o'clock means.

But then I figured that we all simply understand things differently.

Sometimes just reading something that's written a different way can give you a completely new understanding of it.

And that's helpful when it comes to writing articles too because you can take just one article idea and write it several different ways. That makes it fast to write and saves a lot of time.

Not only that, but it helps people to really understand what you're trying to tell them.

So when you have an idea for an article, see how many different ways you can approach writing it.

For example, you can write it as a list article, a story or write about mistakes, such as, "The Biggest Fatal Mistakes That..." And all three articles are explaining the same thing, but simply in different ways.

This not only saves time coming up with ideas, but it can also improve your search engine rankings because when people search for information in different ways, one of your articles will keep showing up.

So when you're writing an article, think of different ways you can say the same thing.

Writing Quickly Helps With Focus

I talk often about writing quickly.

And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, writing quickly does not mean writing badly. It’s just the opposite.

I find that when I sit down to write and put my timer on before I start, it helps me to get straight down to work and not procrastinate, because I don’t have time to waste. I only have 25 minutes to get as much written as I can before the alarm goes off and I have to stop for 5 minutes.

And while I’m writing against the clock it also helps me to stay focused and ignore distractions.

And the more I do it, the better I get.

It’s just like anything in life.

It’s better to practice good habits instead of bad or lazy habits.

Once I sit down and start writing it’s so easy to keep going.

Just try using a timer and see for yourself.

If You Want To Earn Money From Your Writing, Don't Do This

I write a lot of articles and blog posts about how to write quickly.

This isn't because I think that speed is the most important thing (although it is really important), but because I find that the faster I write, the better I write.

I believe it's because when I write quickly it turns off my internal critic, the little voice in my head that wants to edit as I write and keeps telling me that I'm going off track or that my grammar isn't right.

But when I start writing and don't stop, the inner critic in my head can't be heard.

I also set a timer when I write, for about 25 or 30 minutes, so that I'm writing against the clock which helps to keep me going.

So when I talk about writing quickly, I'm talking about writing well, not writing badly.

By all means write as fast as you can, but never EVER write badly.

Don't think that fast writing is good writing. Fast writing simply means you can write more and turn off the inner critic/editor at the same time.

Bad writing is one of the things that ruins writers' chances when they think that just because they can self publish everything they write, they can write garbage.

Don't ever do that.

The Internet is full of book reviews and if you get a lot of bad ones, no one will want to buy your books.

If you want to know if your writing is good, ask yourself if you'd be satisfied with it if you were sending it to a publishing company. Would you send them your manuscript, or would you have written it better or edited it more?

So when you write, do your best writing, do it quickly, don't edit as you write, edit and proof it professionally, and then publish it and get on with your next book.

Writers write, so keep on writing and remember, never write anything but your best.

How to Write a Book in Four Weeks

Writing a book is great.

Writing a book quickly is even better IMHO.

Why?

Because it not only means that you can write more books every year, but writing quickly leaves you no time for second guesses and self doubt.

If you want to hit a daily writing target, then you have to sit and write and not waste time with being your own self critic or trying to edit as you write.

And when you see great writing courses like Write Any Book in 28 Days or Less and BAM - Book a Month (two of my utmost favourite courses), it's easy to see that writing a book in 4 weeks isn't difficult.

You just need to know how to do it.

How To Earn Money Writing Blog Content

How I Earned Over $4,000 Writing Articles In Just One Day I did it using my simple 15 minute article writing system which Includes Research, Writing and Proof Reading
Some writers earn ALL their income from writing blog content, while others use blog content for marketing their books or as a way of earning extra income from their writing.
And all of these are extremely advantageous because the income can be quite substantial.
How Do You Make Money Writing Blog Posts?
I’ve spent years making money from writing articles for my websites and blogs. I’ve even had websites that were simply for nothing else except revenue that I earned from writing articles for them.
And the following is how I did it.
Monetising Blog Posts and Articles
The two simplest ways I found to make money (and there were many) was through advertisements and promoting affiliate products.
I distinguish between blog posts and articles because posts are short and fast to write (300 to 500 words) whereas articles are longer and take more time to write (500 to 3,000 words).
But both can be used to make money.
Finding Keywords to Write About
When I’m only writing blog posts and articles to generate revenue from advertising and affiliate sales, it’s important to get as many people as possible to read them.
This is where keywords are important.
I have a free Google AdWords account that I use to find keywords and key phrases to use.
I try and include them in the title, first paragraph and at least one sub head.
I choose keywords with low competition and low searches to help get my pages indexed on the first page of Google search results.
How to Write Articles Quickly
Time really is critical when working this way so the more articles I can write, the better.
To write quickly I often use my fast article writing system and write an opening paragraph, an ending (conclusion) and at least three points in between that I want to cover.
This is akin to the well-known writing maxim of:
  • Say what you’re going to say (beginning)
  • Say it (three points to cover)
  • Say what you’ve said (conclusion)

This makes article writing so much faster AND easier.
Two Important Points to Remember
Before you write anything at all, there are two things that you need to do.
First, know exactly who you’re writing to. Be able to picture your target market and write directly to them.
Others will visit your site but they are not who you’re writing for so ignore them.
Secondly, make sure that your articles and blog posts contain great information.
Readers should feel like they’ve learned something so make sure that your posts and articles contain at least one great tip.
And that about wraps it up.
Done correctly, you can earn quite a decent income from writing your own blog posts and online articles.
Just make sure that everything you sell (affiliate products) are quality items that  you truly recommend because if someone comes to your site and buys junk, they’ll never trust  you again.
So provide quality both in products you sell and your writing.

Will It Fly?

Will It Fly by Pat Flynn
I recently listened to a podcast of online author and marketer, Pay Flynn being interviewed about his latest book, "Will It Fly? How to Test Your Next Business Idea So You Don't Waste Your Time and Money ?"

This is a book all about thinking carefully before you launch a business as to whether it will fly (succeed) or not (fail).

He likens this to finding out if the wind direction is right before you fly a kite. If all the weather conditions aren't right, the kite won't fly.

He uses real-world case studies with anecdotes from his personal experience of making money online, hosting successful podcasts, testing niche sites, and launching several online businesses.

But anyway, this is not about Pat Flynn's new book, but about how much testing to do before you launch a business.

Which got me thinking about how much testing to do before you launch a product, i.e, write a book.

If you're going to spend a year or two writing a book, then you need to do a lot of research first if you want to earn enough money from book sales to cover all the time it took you to write it.

Publishing companies usually expect a book to make at least 40,000 sales a year to be considered worth keeping published.

For self published authors, these figures don't have to be so high, because you can publish a book online in minutes and get then get on with writing your next book.

And if you can write your books fast, then your ROI (Return On Investment) doesn't need to be high for you to be able to earn an income from your writing.

But don't get me wrong. When I say fast writing I don't mean bad writing. I mean writing quickly and not letting your conscious mind interfere and start criticising what you're writing. Just write in one focused window of inspiration. You'll find that you not only write faster, but better.

Take look at these numbers of book sales to see what I mean about income.

If you spend a year writing a book, then you'd need to earn money quickly from your sales to pay you for the time you've spent writing. It also means that you'll only be publishing one book every year so you still need to sell a heck of a lot of copies of that one book to earn enough money to live on.

But if you wrote a book and published it in just one week (which is SO do-able you won't believe it till you try it), then if you sell it as a $20 ebook and only make 100 sales a week, that's still a weekly income of $2,000. PLUS you'll still be getting income from other ebooks you've written and published.

This is why writing books quickly (instead of sitting around waiting for your muse to show up), is far more profitable.

Not only that but you'll feel great for working so hard and producing so much.

Which will only spur you on to do more.

So instead of sitting around and wondering if your ebook will sell or not, as long as there's already a market for your book, you WILL make sales.

Just know who your customers are and where they hang out online and then write books that they want to read.

Spending less time wondering and more time writing, can give you a much greater ROI, than thinking about whether or not your idea will fly.

Just throw it into the wind and see what happens.

If sales aren't that great and you only sell a few hundred copies, if it only took you a week to write it it's still a great hourly rate.

So don't get it right. Get it written.

And let it fly.

“Short Cut” article writing system you can learn and use immediately, no matter how lazy or busy your are.

“Note Paper With Marker Pen And Paperclips” by everydayplus
Being a successful writer means doing a lot of article writing.

And by successful I mean someone who earns all their income from their writing. If you can make a living as a writer it means that people want to hear what you have to say. They enjoy what you write.

But that means writing a lot of articles (or blog posts…same thing).

This can be hard at first but once you have an article writing system in place, you just work your system and the articles get written with little effort and faster than you ever thought possible.

Successful bloggers write many blog posts, emails and articles.

And they do it by using an article writing system.

You see, no matter what you’re doing, if you don’t have a system, you won’t get as much done as you could.

When I walk my dogs, I know that the first thing I have to do is get my shoes an socks out, get out my keys and my phone and put them in the dog-walking bag that I take with me that also contains ‘poop’ bags.

Then I put on my shoes and socks, put my bag on my shoulder, put the leads on the dogs and off we go.

That’s my dog walking system.

When I clean out the car I take everything out of it first, shake the mats, polish the inside, vacuum the mats, vacuum inside the car, put everything back in and wash the outside.

It’s a system and washing the car would take a lot longer if I had to stop and think all the time or I forgot to take everything out before I polished or forgot to take out the mats first.

Having a system for doing things makes me efficient.

It’s like cooking a meal. I have to follow a recipe and do things in the correct order so that everything finishes cooking at the same time. And I’ve been making family meals for so long now that I have a great system in the kitchen.

And it’s no different when it comes to writing articles.

I gather ideas in one book.

I go to the book when I want to write an article.

I outline an article.

I write the article.

I find a suitable image to accompany it.

I proof and edit the article (searching for the image first gives me a bit of space between writing and editing so that I have “fresh” eyes to read it with).
I upload it along with the image.

I preview it.

I hit publish.

And it goes even deeper than that because I also have a system for how I structure an article, meaning I have a way that I set them out with a beginning a middle and an end.

My article writing system is so streamlined that it makes it really easy to write several articles an hour.

How about you?

If you’re not finding enough time to write, having an article writing system with definitely enable you to get more articles written without needing more time, no matter how busy or how lazy you are.

A good article writing system makes things easier and fast.

Does Article Marketing Still Work?

Writing articles and uploading them to an article directory used to be one of the fastest and easiest ways to make more money on the Internet.

Article directories like EzineArticles.com were gold.

Writing one short article and uploading it would produce a flood of email subscribers and ebook sales.

Then things changed a few years ago when Google decided to not include article directories in it's search results.

Many writers stopped doing article marketing this way because the results plummeted.

But not me.

I kept publishing articles on EzineArticles.com.

And what I've found is that although my articles get less views now, they still get read and it still produces results.

So although the audience for these types of articles is smaller, they are more targeted and more interested in what I have to say.

So I keep doing it, because it still works for me.

And with less people submitting articles, there's less competition.

How Important Is Making Money From Writing?

Many purists will tell you that writing is an art form and so you should never be so vulgar to discuss money in the same sentence.

And to that I say, rubbish.

We all want to earn money from our writing and we want to earn enough so that we can quit the day job and write.

But how important should money be? Should you care more about earning money than about your writing?

No.

Writing and publishing should lead to money but wanting to earn money shouldn’t lead you to writing.

You should write because you love to write and not because you think it’s a fast and easy way to make money.

If you do that, your writing will never be good.

A perfect example of this is a writer I heard from who said she’d studied the market and discovered that the fastest selling ebooks were romance novels.

She wanted to write ebooks because, she said, they were a good source of passive income and so she could work once and go on earning money from her novels for years.

Her goal was to write 30 novels. By her math it would provide her with over $10k/month income through ebook sales.

To get the money faster she wrote her 30 novels in less than a year by writing each ebook in 10 days which is 3 a month and so she’d reach her income goal in a year.

The problem with the plan was that she was writing the books so fast and under so much self-inflicted pressure, that her novels were badly written, full of typos and the plots were trite and uninteresting.
The result is that 18 months later, her ebooks sales are still low.

I thought it would be a better plan to write one really good novel a month instead of 3 really bad ones.

But she wasn’t really a writer to start with. She just thought writing was a way to easy money.

There’s plenty of food for thought in that, isn’t there?

If you’re not a writer, and by that I mean someone who enjoys writing, then you’ll never make a lot of money as a writer.

Writing is a talent that some people have and many don’t.

Most experienced writers find it difficult to write under so much pressure which would make it impossible for a non-writer to do it.

But she tried.

And failed.

Just enjoy writing and keep doing it and eventually you’ll get faster naturally.

I know I did.

Can you imagine how much writing you’d be able to do and how much money you’d earn if your downloaded and worked on writing courses such as these?

There are many more writing courses available to download online so there really is no excuse for not getting started today, even if you don’t have an idea of what you want to write.

All you need is a goal of what you want to achieve then get to work and do it.

Some people never get started with their writing because they’re afraid they’ll fail. While others are afraid they’ll succeed.

If you don’t make a determined start now, what will you achieve in one week’s time, in a month or in a year?

Nothing.

Ask yourself this:

  • What is your goal with your writing?
  • How are you going to achieve it?
  • Why haven’t you started?

Now would be a great time to begin.

I've Brought the Dead Back to Life - And It's Free!

Last year I began a free series of emails and free ebooks about how to write articles and ebooks quickly and how it could help you to earn more money.

I created them because I put links in them to a couple of writing products that I was selling as an affiliate.

I actually owned the products myself and really liked them so I agreed to help market them.

Everything was going fine until I hit a huge snag...

This is the Time of Year When Writing Gets Faster

In many parts of the world, the weather is cooling down and winter will arrive in a few weeks.

In other parts of the world (including mine), the weather is getting warmer and summer will be here soon.

But no matter where you live in the world, now is the time of year when writing gets faster, and if you get involved you can be blown away with your writing speed and output.

My Week of Non-Stop Writing

This has been a busy week for me. I've been writing non-stop.

Well, it's not just been writing but researching and gathering material.

I'm currently working on my next ebook for writers and I've decided to add two bonus products as well.

By the time I'm finished, this will be one massive offer with everything you need to start writing and making money.

Writing Quickly Can Be Done

My latest obsession, as you know, is writing quickly.

I was intrigued to know if it was possible.

I know I can write quickly because I can type at up to 80 words per minute. But that’s usually when I’m typing up what I’ve already written by hand so it requires no thinking.

But what if I had to write (type) quickly without working from handwritten notes?

Would my writing be up to quality or would writing quickly make me churn out garbage?

Surprising, (and I was surprised, I have to confess) writing faster has not altered the quality of my writing. It has just speeded up the process because it leaves me no time to doubt what I’m writing.
