What Do You Need More Than Money To Implement Your Ideas?

I was recently watching a short video of a speech given by the money-making guru, Joe Vitale. Un-coincidently, it had the same title as the one I’ve used here (nothing wrong with borrowing a good idea, and titles aren’t copyrighted, or so I’m told).

What intrigued me about it was that he was saying almost the same thing I’ve been saying for a long time now, and that is, if you want to write, sit down and do it. Show up every day and work.

And he was saying that too many people think that they can’t implement any ideas they have (writing-related or otherwise) because they don’t have the money to do it.

But if you have a great idea you don’t need money because no matter how much you spend or how much you buy, it won’t help you to implement your ideas.

Dr Joe Vitale said you don’t need money, you need creativity because not having money makes you think, wonder and create strategies.

You need courage, creativity and to act to get things started.

Then one step leads to another.

And it all starts with one idea.

Free Text Editor

For a few years now I’ve been using a free text editor called Grammarly, which I like very much. But now I also use another one that is useful in different ways.

Grammarly is great because it picks up on misused words and misspelled words and bad punctuation.

But now I’ve also started to use another free text editor that is just as useful as Grammarly but in different ways.

This text editor is called Hemingway, and the way it works is you copy and paste your writing into it, and it highlights what it thinks is passive voice as well as unnecessary adverbs and clunky, hard-to-read sentences. It can also word count and well as counting letters, characters, sentences, and paragraphs.

It’s brilliant at picking out passive voice which is always better to change to active voice, as in changing “he started running” to “he ran.”

The ability for it to pick up on hard-to-read sentences is also extremely useful.

But the only downside to it is that it not only tells you to get rid of unnecessary adverbs, but all adverbs. Yep, it seems that the Hemingway text editor doesn’t like adverbs at all.

For example, if you write, “blared loudly” it will tell you to remove the adverb “loudly.”

But if you write, “said jokingly” it will tell you to get rid of “jokingly” which is something you’d probably want to keep. Ironically, when I ran this article through Hemingway, it highlighted the words jokingly and loudly and said to omit them.

I could also say that another downside is that it may think some of your sentences have too many complex phrases or long sentences, but that all depends on what grade of readability your audience has. If you’re writing to someone who has a good understanding of the complex issue you're discussing, then there is nothing wrong with using long sentences, etc.

But you can use your judgment of your own work. Either way, the Hemingway text editor is great for picking up on errors you might not see in your own writing and it costs nothing to use.

How I’m Selling More Books in More Countries

I earn most of my income from selling books and ebooks.

And like many other writers, I used to do it through Amazon’s Kindle platform, which now allows you to sell print books as well as Kindle books.

The great thing about selling books that way was that it was quick, easy, and it was a set and forget system.

The only bad thing about it was that my books were only available through Amazon and nowhere else.

But now I publish them through Ingram which means that all my books are available as print books, ebooks and sell worldwide from just about anywhere.

And although it’s early days and I haven’t yet done the math of how my sales are doing compared to only selling on Amazon (which, btw, they’re still available from) one thing I am sure of is that I’m now selling far more books than I was when I was only using Amazon Kindle.

Not only that, but my books are also available for libraries to purchase, so if your local library has a copy you can borrow them for free. And if they don’t have a copy of any of my books, put in a request for them to purchase it.

So now I’m not only selling more books (which I hope will increase exponentially in time) but I feel much more like a publisher rather than just a writer.

Go to my website now and you can easily purchase any of my books from many different booksellers all over the world.

The Simple ‘Trick’ That’s Get’s You Writing Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

The other day, I sat down at my desk to write and the next thing I knew over half an hour had passed and I hadn’t even started writing and instead, I was checking email and reading a few online articles and blog posts that were in my RSS reader.

When I suddenly realised how much time I’d wasted I instantly closed my email and my browser, got out my writing computer (My Mac Book Air) and got to work.

And this is the simple “trick” that can get you writing every day, even when you don’t feel like it.

What is this “trick” you ask?

Did you miss it?

What I did was, I simply started working, and usually that’s all it takes.

The easiest way to earn more money writing is to simply show up and do the work every day. Even if you’re not the world’s greatest writer, you can earn more money from your writing than most other people if you outwork them.

Even if you only end up working for 30 minutes a day it’s better than not showing up at all.

I only set out to work for 2 to 3 hours a day, but I usually end up doing more or going back later to finish.

A person who hardly ever writes yet is good at what they do, will never earn as much money as a mediocre writer who writes every day.

It’s possible to outwork everyone else just by showing up daily.

And I’ll let you in on a secret; even the best and most successful writers, often find it hard to start. But what makes them the best and most successful, is they don’t let that stop them.

So if you haven’t started showing up and writing every day, you can start now.

The Rich Dad, Poor Dad Truth About Writing an eBook

I used to think that when it came to making money as an author, the most important thing was to be able to write books.

But I soon realised that it wasn’t true.

It seemed that writing a book wasn’t enough. What I really need to know was how to sell it.

And that’s why I began to read dozens of books about marketing, including one of my favourites, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

You see, marketing is the most important aspect of being in business and earning money.

As an example, anyone can make a better burger than McDonald's, but McDonald's know how to market. That's why they outsell all other burger joints.

So you don’t just need to know how to write a book, but how to sell it.

This is why one of my favourite ebooks is The 10-Day Ebook Writing and Publishing System because it not only guides you step-by-step through writing and publishing an ebook, it also shows you how you can earn $1,000 a month from it.

Writing a book (or an ebook) and not making sales is a waste of time.

But the 10 Day eBook, not only saves you time (in just 10 days), it helps you earn money from every ebook you write.

I know because I use it myself.

Essentialism and Writing

Many people think that essentialism means doing more.

But it actually means doing less so that you have more time to spend on the essentials in your life.

It means doing less of the unimportant things, or things that no longer serve you, like overeating, watching too much TV, and less of other things that you don’t want in your life including friends and family always wanting favours or wanting your attention.

If you want to write, just write. Tell them you’re busy.

Essentialism isn’t about doing less, but doing less of the unimportant things in your life.

And only you know what’s important to you. Don’t let anyone take that away.

Want to write more?

Do it.

Why Your Writing Blog or Website Is Not Your Writing Business

It’s easy to be deceived into thinking that if you write for your own blog or website, that it’s your online writing business, as in “I own my own blog/website.” (And for the sake of ease, I’ll refer to both as a blog)

But it doesn't matter how many blog posts you write or how many articles you upload your blog is not your writing business. It’s a distribution channel.

And what does it distribute?

Your books or your writing service, because these are the products you sell.

Your blog is there to guide prospects to the products you sell.

So to earn more money, what you need is more products to sell.

I’ve always found a financial correlation between how many products I sell and how much money I make, and  I use my online sites to advertise my latest books or other products.

So even if you call yourself a blogger, your blog is still your distribution channel where you market the products you sell.

Don't Buy a Writing Product. Invest In It.

Last week I received a copy of Writing Magazine in the Mail.

I used to subscribe to this magazine years ago but then stopped. But recently I decided to subscribe again and I found it when I checked my mailbox a few days ago, and it also included a copy of the 2020 writing competitions guide, which contains over 670 writing competitions from now until the end of next year.

So the day it arrived I sat and read it from cover to cover, which, as it happened, took all day.

But while going through it I was highlighting things that I wanted to go back to use, including 9 free-to-enter writing competitions for this month, 2 article ideas I can write about, 6 freelance writing markets I want to submit to, plus I learned a lot from the writing articles in it too.

So I didn't just buy the magazine, I invested in it because the magazine cost me roughly $10, but with the things I'm going to submit to, it means I could earn several hundred dollars (or more).

And I'd already decided to invest in the magazine and not just buy it before I subscribed. This is something that I do with every writing product I buy whether it's software, books, magazines or websites that I subscribe to. Once I receive my products, I make sure that they earn me far more than I paid for them. Even if I try something and find out that it's not really what I want to do, I at least make sure that I try it once and earn money from it.

Some of the other writing products that I've invested in over the years include

Quick Cash Writing,

Write Any Book in 28 Days or Less

10 Day Ebook Writing System.

So if you're thinking of purchasing a new writing product, or you already have one that you haven't used yet, get it and make it work for you. Do the work.

Don't just passively read it once and say it didn't work. Do the work.

If it's just a simple information book/product, don't just read it once, read it at least 10 times and make notes so that you're not just reading it, you're absorbing all the information in it so that you can use it later.

Turn all the writing books and products that you've ever bought, and those that you will buy in the future into an investment instead of just an ordinary purchase.

Should You Or Could You Be a Writer?

We’ve all heard of the expression “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda.” It’s what we say to people who have lame excuses for not doing something.

And this is also appropriate for you if you’re not writing.

Shoulda - This is when you’ve wasted time when you shoulda been writing. It can be when you let yourself get distracted by other things instead of getting your writing done. Or when you wasted time by prioritising other things/people.

Coulda - You coulda got your writing done but you didn’t think you were good enough or motivated enough or dedicated enough. Sound familiar?

Woulda - Well, you woulda done your writing if only other things hadn’t happened or something else hadn’t come up, or if you had the time, or if you weren’t so busy…

All these things are weak excuses. They’re not reasons why you aren’t writing every day, they’re just a bunch of Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda.

What it all comes down to is whether or not you really want to be a writer.

And if you do, then the time to start writing is now.

3 Steps to Living Your Dream Life as a Writer

It’s so easy to dream about becoming a successful writer. You imagine yourself gliding into your home office, dashing off another bestseller, and still have time to go out for dinner in the evening.

Wouldn’t it be great if it really happened that way?

The reality, of course, is really different and there are so many things that can stop your writing dream coming true and here are just 3 of them.

1. Time To Write. No matter what you do, you never seem to be able to find the time to actually sit down and write. You may even begin every day with good intentions, yet time eludes you and before you know it, the day’s over and you haven’t written a thing.

2. Others Not Supportive. If there’s one thing that I learned early on, it’s that others won’t support you when you want to be a writer. And the closer you are to them the more resentful they seem. My family and friends are the worst and none of them will even discuss my writing, even though I’ve been earning my income from writing for years.

3. Guilt. It’s all too easy to feel guilty about wanting to write because you always feel that you should be doing other things. It’s probably because writing seems selfish because it’s something that you need to do alone, without anyone even speaking to you. And it doesn’t help when others are unsupportive because it can make you feel like you have to write in secret.

But you really shouldn’t let any of these things stop you because we all have time to write if we prioritise it instead of trying to fit it into our spare time.

We can also ignore everyone who doesn’t support what we want to do. In fact, I’d even go as far as saying to spend less time with them and more time writing.

And stop feeling guilty about writing because it IS important to you. Knitters don’t feel guilty about knitting, gardeners don’t feel guilty about spending time gardening, and artists don’t feel guilty about wanting to paint or draw. So why should you feel guilty about wanting to write?

The time to turn your life around and live your dream life of being a writer is now.

Getting More Writing Time Than I Wanted...OR...Be Careful What You Wish For

A couple of weeks ago I announced that I'd been not doing much writing lately... well none really, but that I was finally getting back into writing regularly.

And I kept telling myself that I needed to get more time with my backside firmly planted in my writing chair and that until I spent enough time writing, I wasn't going to get much done.

So I kept doing that visualization thing where you picture yourself in your mind doing what you wish you were doing.

And guess what?

It worked. Just not in the way that I wanted it to. Not at all.

You see, last month I was suffering from some kind of flu virus and I ended up with the worst cough I've ever had. It went on for over 2 weeks and I was coughing really hard, day and night. In fact, I was coughing and coughing until I choked.

And it really started to hurt my back and my sides which gave me trouble sleeping too, once my cough subsided so that I could sleep. But eventually the pain went away, except for my left side where it continued to hurt and I started to think I'd pulled a muscle or something.

And then last week we had a spell of really warm weather, so my husband and I decided to open the PVC blinds on our verandah. He clicked the spring on the right that was holding down each blind and I clicked the one of the left and then we lifted them one by one. Until we got to the third one...

I bent down to click in the spring and SNAP! I felt a searing pain in my left side and felt something grinding inside.

It was awful and it rendered me hardly able to move. I spent the rest of the day laid up in bed, taking copious amounts of pain killers. The next day it was no better so I went to the doctor and guess what? I'd cracked a rib.

So now it's been nearly a week and I'm still laid up in bed, but at least the pain isn't as bad as it was. At first it hurt all the time no matter what I did. But now it stops hurting if I sit still. And I've gotten used to the painkillers so they don't knock me out and make me sleep all day anymore, like they did for the first few days that I took them.

So you see what happened? I wished for more time to write and now I've got all day every day. Only it's not what I wanted at all. In fact, I have even more waking hours in every day now because I'm lacking exercise so I'm not tired at night so I'm up late all the time. Well, I say up, but I'm actually in bed the whole time.

So the lesson from this is, be careful what you wish for.

On the upside, it gives me plenty of time to pursue my Laptop Lifestyle.

An Expert's Advice on How To Beat Writers' Block Instantly

I was recently listening to an interview with one of the Titans of Copywriting, Gary Bencivenga. And in case you've been living in a cave and have never heard of him, he is known as the best copywriter in the world and began working in direct response copywriting in the 1960s. Sadly, he no longer works in the industry, but he and inspired taught thousands of marketers during his long career.

Anyway, in this interview he was talking about what to do when you don't have any ideas about what to write. He said that copywriters often have this problem because their work begins with getting ideas of what to write about before they can promote a product.

Anyway, what he said was that whenever you don't know what to write or are stuck with writers' block, all you need to do is start researching and that is guaranteed to get you started. He said that research is the answer to writers' block as well as helping find all the information he ever needed.

But then I got to thinking about where to start researching?

Well, the obvious choice is to do a general search on the topic that you want to write about. Just go to one of the search engines and type in a question or a keyword and see what comes up in the results. Sometimes, the search engines prompt for subjects that are already searched for often.

Another way to do it is to go to an online book store (or magazine site) and look to see what other writers are writing about on your topic. You can easily browse the TOC (Table of Contents) of a book to see the subjects of the chapters they are including in their writing.

And then there are also forums and social media which often show up what is trending or what is popular. They can also show you exactly what questions people are asking about right now.

So if you're feeling stuck and don't know what to write, start doing a bit of online research and before you know it, you'll have so much information and you'll feel motivated to write.
