My Website For Writers is More Popular Than Ever

I've been running a website for writers for well over a decade now.

At first, I had a site that was a bit of a hit and miss with design and content because I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing, but it was still popular.

Then I created a better site for writers that was really popular and I received thousands of signups for my newsletter.

Then I sold that website but kept my email list and began a new website for writers which I still have at https://ruthiswriting.com.

But a few months ago I retired my email list to concentrate on my writing more, but as it turned out, I've spent more time working on our house renovations.

It's been a really busy time here with so much to do including buying new furniture and fittings, small renovations jobs we've had to do ourselves, making curtains, and having so many builders here, all with questions when building things don't go according to plan, which it turns out, happens often.

So I've been sucked away with dealing with everything going on here including having a family member in hospital for a few weeks and my husband having shingles.

But through it all I've still been writing (but not as much as I've wanted to), sorting out a new distribution channel for my books, and also keeping an eye on my websites.

And what I found that was surprising is that my RuthIsWriting.com website has become more popular than ever with far more page views than ever before.

I had thought about retiring that website but now I'm having second thoughts.

So what I'm going to do is revive it in the New Year and write regular writing articles and also allow guest articles from other great writers.

I may even start another email list so that everyone can follow what I'm doing and learn even more ways to earn money from writing.

So watch this space.

I'm also going to be revamping and improving all my books and ebooks for writers which means they will be bigger and more expensive than they are now. So if you want to take advantage of their current low prices, you'd better act now.

And if you do, you can use them to help you earn more money from your writing than ever before.

The "Yoda" Way to Write More and Earn More

"Do or do not. There is no try."
~ Yoda

If you want to earn more money from your writing (and don't we all), the 'so-easy-you'll-kick-yourself' thing to do is eliminate one 3-letter word from your vocabulary.

And that word is 'try.'

When you want to get a writing project done, don't say you're going to try and finish it.

Instead, replace "I'll try to get this writing done" with "I'm going to get this writing done."

And then just sit down and do it.

No excuses.

Saying you're going to try and get something done means you're already seeing yourself NOT doing it.

It's like when someone says "I'll try and make it to the party tonight," which really means they're not going to make it at all. And we all know that.

And it's the same when you say you're going to try and get more writing done or try and get a project finished. As soon as you use the word 'try' you're already defeated.

So starting today, remove the word 'try' when you're talking about getting things done.

As the wise Yoda said to Luke Skywalker in the movie Star Wars, "There is no try."

So tell yourself you'll do it and you will.

But tell yourself you'll try, and you won't.

Now...sit down and write.

Stop Waiting and Start Writing

Many people I’ve met who call themselves writers never actually write a thing.

They’re all talk, and they have a multitude of reasons for not writing, and none of them are true.

Many say that their writing is still in the ‘planning stage’ whatever THAT means.

But it does remind me of an episode from the British sitcom, Red Dwarf (which is hilarious).

The comedy is set on an interplanetary mining ship that is lost in deep space.

One of the crew, Arnold Rimmer, wants to take the officers exam so that he can be promoted.

But he’s so nervous about it that he spends all his time planning how he’s going to have enough time to study for it.

In the end, he takes so long to plan out his study time, that he ends up with no time to study and fails the exam.

And this can be a problem for many writers who are busy ‘planning’ their writing without ever writing anything.

So what can you do if you find yourself procrastinating all the time instead of writing?

Simply this: -

Don’t get it right, get it written.

This means just do it, because writing badly is better than not writing at all.

In fact, I feel so strongly about this, that I’ve changed the subheading on my writing site (https://ruthiswriting.com) to “Don’t Get It Right, Get It Written” because that’s what you need to be doing every day.

And if you’re stuck for a way to find so many writing ideas that you’ll be suffering from ‘Idea Overload,’ read my latest article, Never Look An Off-Line Gift Horse In The Mouth at https://ruthiswriting.com/articles/2018/offline-gifthorse.html

Book Review: Abundance Now: Amplify Your life and Achieve Prosperity Today

I recently read the book "Abundance Now: Amplify Your life and Achieve Prosperity Today" by Lisa Nichols & Janet Switzer

Did I like it?

Not one bit.

Usually, I don't write a negative review of a book. If I don't like it I  just don't say anything.

But this time I thought it was worth giving my opinion of it to warn others because I felt like this book wasn't what it was supposed to be.

I've heard the author, Lisa Nichols, on 'The Secret' (I have the audio version) several years ago so I was intrigued to read a book of hers when I saw it.

Sadly, I wish I hadn't bothered.

This is how my review starts:

"I borrowed this book from my local library and all I can say is, thank goodness I didn't buy it because it would have been a complete waste of money."

You can read the rest at https://ruthiswriting.com/reviews/abundance.html.

I read a lot of books but this one was one of the most disappointing.

I hope you have better luck with whatever book you're currently reading.

I've just started reading Psyco Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. I'm only a few pages into it but already it's got me intrigued and I can't wait to read more.

How to find FREE Images, Sound, Music, and Videos – that you can use LEGALLY Use

When you are blogging, you absolutely need free images – that you can use legally. When you are podcasting, you need a sound effect or a piece of music once in a while. And even when you are creating videos, you might from time to time need a snippet of video that you can’t shoot yourself.

In short, when you are creating anything for the online world, you absolutely need third-party content to make your own content awesome.

If you don’t know what you are doing, you are entering a legal minefield. And if you aren’t careful, you may receive a friendly letter from a lawyer with a DMCA takedown notice. Or worse.

Have I Misled You About Writing Quickly?

As you know I talk a lot about writing quickly and how much it can help you.

I've even written ebooks about it like my 7 day ebook writing and publishing system and how to write articles in 15 minutes or less.

But what I mean by writing quickly isn't just about writing fast.

Writing quickly doesn't mean always rushing. It means being focused.

Writing and earning money is all about practice, which leads to proficiency, and the ability to write fast comes naturally from that.

But it all originates from focus and constant effort, not rushing.

I always remember watching my mother vacuuming the house. She would always press as hard as she could and move the vacuum cleaner backwards and forwards really fast, going over the same bit of carpet again and again, which always left her sweating and out of breath.

When I vacuum the house, I don't press on the vacuum cleaner at all and I move it over the floors, rugs and carpets slow and steady to give the machine time to do its job and to make sure I see every bit of dirt.

And the end result is that the vacuuming is done faster and better because I'm focused on doing it properly and the vacuum isn't pressed into the floor which gives it the opportunity to work properly.

And it's the same with writing quickly which is also about focus and the ability to keep working without letting anything distract you.

So you don't have to go hard and fast at writing, just stay focused on your writing and it will get done not only faster (because you're not getting distracted and drifting off onto other things) and better (because you're paying more attention to what you're doing).

And eventually, as you practice writing with more focus, you'll get faster naturally.

So if you want to write faster, don't think about rushing, think about being more focused on your writing.

That's what my products are for. Not only do they give you the complete process of how to work, but they give you a tight writing frame (one week for a book or 15 minutes for an article), which forces you to focus because you don't have time to do anything else.

And when you repeat writing this way, practice really does make you faster and better.

Try it and see for yourself.

Automated Advertising For Your Blog or Website

Last year I came across a company called VigLink.

It's a really useful company that helps me earn more money from my blogs and websites.

And the best part about it is that VigLink does most of it automatically so that all I do is write a blog post or an article and it inserts affiliate links or PPC links.

I can, of course, search through their extensive list of merchants and insert links of my own, and at the same time, they will insert links automatically as well.

There is also an option to let them optimise my links, which means that if a link has been created to one merchant's site, and another merchant is offering the same product for a higher affiliate commission, VigLink will automatically change the link to the higher paying merchant (unless you opt out).

They also have an option called Anywhere which you add to your browser's favourites/menu bar and when you visit a webpage with a product you'd like to promote, you just click the 'Anywhere' link and it will either give you an affiliate link to it or tell you that VigLink is not currently associated with that website.

And the Anywhere links can be used...well...anywhere, including social media posts so if you come across a site that sells really great running shoes, you can get an Anywhere link straight away and do a social media post about how cool you think the shoes are and include your Anywhere link.

VigLink also has a really easy-to-use dashboard and they pay commissions monthly.

So why am I telling you about this now?

Because it's almost the weekend and I was thinking that if you joined VigLink right now, you could start earning commissions on the weekend while you're off enjoying yourself.

It's really easy to set up an account and then all you have to do is add a piece of code to your website or blog (they have complete instructions for all the different blogging software including Blogger and Word Press and even simple HTML websites) and it can all be done in just a few minutes.

And that's it.

They make it so easy to earn more money from your website or blog without doing anything.

You just set up an account, copy and paste a small piece of code into your website or blog, and that's it.

So if you already have links to websites that are affiliated with VigLink such as https://www.barnesandnoble.com or http://ebay.com, VigLink will turn those ordinary links into affiliate links.

Their software will search your site for any links that aren't affiliate links and change them, even if they're links from years ago.

Some of the links on your site will be CPA (Cost Per Action) which means you earn commission for sales and/or signups, or CPP (Cost Per Click) which means you'll earn money every time someone clicks on a link, regardless of whether they buy something or not. Or you can choose to only have CPA links or CPP links.

So before you finish writing for the week and go off to enjoy your weekend, think about adding some bonus income to your website or blog that can work for you, even when you're not.

Article Spinners? Forget Them

The other day I saw online someone singing the praises of an article spinner they'd invented.

The point of using them is to reduce writing time, or not have to write anything at all.

Article spinners work like nothing more than a giant Thesaurus.

You load an article into it and the software finds different words and phrases with (supposedly) the same meaning as the one you've used.

The premise is that you replace the words and phrases already in the article with the different words/phrases that the software prompts you to use and voila! You have a whole new article to publish.

Well...that's fine in theory, but not so good in practice.

Or some software (usually the free-but-completely-useless type) lets you upload an article to your blog or website as-is and "spins" it automatically for you, which usually ends up as unreadable garbage.

I had this happen to me a few years ago when someone started republishing some of my free articles and rendered them as complete garbage by "spinning" them.

You can read about it here https://bit.ly/2uLRhaY.

But what got me about the description I was reading about the article spinner and how it worked, was that it said that you could use the software to upload someone else's article and create a "new" article from it in just 20 minutes.

20 MINUTES!

So first you have to go online and search around for an article you want to try and get away with plagiarising, and then you have to copy and paste it into the software and go through it line by line, changing words and phrases as you go.

And at the end of it, you may or may not have a decent article that no one will recognise as actually being copyrighted to someone else, because let's face it, using someone else's article and trying to make it look like a completely different one so that you can illegally put your name to it as the author, is copyright theft.

I mean...is it really worth it to buy the software and then go through all that to try and steal someone else's article?

If you're a writer, and I'm assuming you are if you're reading this, then it's faster and better to simply write your own articles.

I've been writing for years and I've always written my own articles and have never used article spinning software.

And what I've found is that the more I write, the better and faster I get.

So much so, that now it only takes me around 15 minutes to write an article.

And I write them a lot because I write blog posts, website articles, emails and marketing articles, (amongst other things) so I don't have time to waste trying to cheat.

I'm a writer so I just write.

Don't be fooled by anyone's claim that you can write something without having to actually write it.

How I Listen to Ebooks and Articles

Sometimes I come across long articles and ebooks that I want to read but I don't have time.

So I listen to them instead when I'm doing other things like cleaning or weeding (both of which are dull and tedious) or cleaning the car.

If it's an ebook, I open it on my Kindle App on my iPhone. Then I swipe two fingers down the screen from the top and SIRI starts reading it to me. The pages also turn automatically too.

If it's an online article, I open it on my iPhone browser, choose "reader" mode from the URL from the menu (the little horizontal lines that appear in front of the URL when you hover over it) to get rid of all the clutter on the page, like ads and banners, and then I do the two-finger downward swipe from the top of the screen and SIRI's voice kicks in again.

If I'm on my Mac Book Pro computer, I use the speech option from the top menu which is in the drop-down list under "Edit."

I learn a lot from listening to ebooks and articles plus, being engrossed in what I'm listening to always helps me glide through boring chores. Not only that but sometimes I do extra chores just so that I can finish what I'm listening to.

If I like what I hear I often go back and read it later and take notes when I get time.

And it always ends up as a win-win situation because chores get done while I'm entertained and I learn something all at the same time.

Earn Money Writing From Everything You Read

There's no doubt that the saying is true.

Writers are readers.

Now you may think that it can't be true because you don't read much at all, so let me rephrase that:

Successful writers are readers. (If you don't read a lot, you probably don't write a lot either.)

They read a lot.

And over the years I've discovered that I can earn money from things that I read.

I do it quite by accident, yet it happens often.

What I do is, when I'm reading something and I want to remember it, I take notes.

I read a sentence or two, or a paragraph or two and then in my own words, I write it down.

I write down what I've just learned, just like I used to do when I was studying at school and university.

I especially do it when I'm reading a book from the library because I can't keep it. But I can keep my book of notes and quotes (I write out passages from the book that I think are remarkable).

And then sometime later, when I want to look for something in my notes, I realise that what I've written is gold.

So I rewrite and expand it all into a series of articles or emails or even a book.

And that's how I earn money from what I read.

But as a cautionary note, I'm not saying I plagiarise. I don't write things out word-for-word (except for the short quotes).

I write everything in my own words, the way I understood it, just like I used to do at school when I was studying for exams.

Do You Want to Write or Do You Force Yourself?

The other day I was listening to a podcast interview with a really famous - and wealthy - copywriter.

He was talking about his work and how much he writes every day and how successful he is, when the interviewer asked him, "So are you eager to sit down and write every day?"

"No," he said.

"So how often DON'T you feel like writing?"

"Every day."

The interviewer gasped. "You never feel like writing?"

"No. Never. But once I sit down and read just one sentence, I'm back in the zone and can work for hours. But at first I have to force myself to sit and write because it's always the last thing I want to do."

(Naturally, I'm paraphrasing here because I don't remember the exact words, but that was the general gist of the conversation.)

My flabber was absolutely ghasted at this revelation.

Even though I've read Stephen Pressfield's book, The War of Art, several times (which is all about fighting the Resistance to writing every day) I still always feel like I'm the only one this happens to.

In my over-romantic imagination, other writers wake up smiling, stretch happily then get out of bed, while little bluebirds land on their windowsill and sing sweetly while they slip on beautiful clothes and glide dreamily into their study where they sit and effortlessly work on another best seller.

I know, how could I even think that?

But like the copywriter, I don't always feel like writing, but once I start it's easy to have a total mind-shift and keep going.

Applying plenty of butt-time to chair every day is the only way to conquer writing Resistance.

How To Make Money From Blogging When You Have Nothing to Sell (and you just want to write blog posts and articles)

What if...you wanted to make money writing articles.

Just that.

You didn't want to sell anything.

You just wanted to sit, write articles, upload them to your blog/website without having anything to sell.

Can you make money that way?

Is it really possible?

As a matter of fact it is.

But it doesn't work by magic.

The way to do it is by using PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising so that people come to your blog, read your article and then, hopefully, click on one of the ads on that page so that you earn some money.

Naturally, there's a right and a wrong way to do it.

First of all, you need to get as many visitors as possible to your blog because the more visitors you get, the more clicks you'll get.

So you need to use the correct keywords in everything you write to make sure that plenty of people find your articles when they're searching on Google.

And those keywords need to be high-paying if you want to earn your living this way.

As you can imagine, this is quite a big topic if you want it explaining properly.

Two free resources that can help you are a 2008 audio of an interview with Tim Gorman who made his fortune working this way. http://www.thesystemseminar.com/teleseminars/gorman.html.

And there is also the free 2004 PDF, 33 Days to Online Profits, which walks you through setting up a blog. http://nicheology.com/training/ebooks/33_Days_2004_edition.pdf

Both of these, although somewhat out of date, can teach you how to make money blogging using PPC advertising.

And if you don't want to write all your blog content from scratch, you can use PLR ebooks and articles that you can rewrite as your own. Read more about how to do that at https://ruthiswriting.com/articles/2018/PLR-ebook-club.html.

If you want to set a blog for free, you can use a free Google Blogger blog like this one. It's easy and you can start blogging straight away.

And then you can use the two previously mentioned resources to help you understand how bloggers make money from blogging.

And even if you don't know how to set up a blog, there's help for that too. https://bit.ly/2B2uMzl.

Earning money from blogging this way, can be done part-time so even if you already have a full-time job, or you're busy writing books, you can still earn extra money from your writing with a simple blog that you post to just once a day, or a couple of times a week.

That's what's so great about being a writer.

There are so many different ways you can earn money from your writing.

So what are you waiting for?

Make Money Writing Online - An Easy Way to Start

Last week I came across an amazing resource for writers.

It’s a website that you can join and it has tens of thousands of digital products including ebooks, videos and software, that you can download and keep.

It’s PLR which is Private Label Rights so that you can rewrite, reuse, rebrand or do anything else you want with what you download.

There are also over one hundred thousand PLR articles spanning over 400 niches that you can use too.

Can you imagine wanting to write and make money online but not knowing where to start. Or you used to be good at it but now you’re feeling stuck.

And then you find that you can download and rewrite and reuse thousands of products and articles or use them for inspiration and ideas for your own products.

All of a sudden you’ve got a whole library of products and content to use yourself, sell, giveaway, rewrite, rebrand, use for inspiration and ideas and research, or you could even create your own audio recordings from what you find.

Honestly, when you have this much content to choose from, the ways of how to use it can be endless.

You could end up with never having to worry about where to get ideas from or products to sell ever again.

I’ve written more fully about it over on my website.

You can check it out by clicking the link below.

I'm a Slacker Not a Writer

You may have noticed recently that I've not published anything online.

Nada. Nothing.

Not even social media posts.

Not only have I not published anything in over a week, but I haven't written anything either.

I feel like such a slacker.

But next week will be different.

Next week I'll get my butt back in my chair and do some work.

The reason I've been so slack about writing and publishing lately is that my beautiful friend and constant companion died last Friday.

My beloved 12-year-old greyhound, Banjo, had to be euthanised after the painful injuries from his previous racing days became so great that even his strong medications weren't helping anymore and they were also starting to make him really ill.

So it was a painful decision to put an end to his suffering, but it had to be done.

My husband and I then immediately booked a hotel and took off to the city for a couple of days.

But then we had to return on Monday morning and face our empty house and remove all Banjo's belongings, including his six big dog beds (how did he ever get so many beds?).

Banjo was a 'velcro' dog because he was always by my side and never wanted to be left alone. Wherever I was, Banjo was right there with me, even laying so close to my desk chair that his head touched the wheels so I always had to look down before I moved it even an inch.

I've cried a river and an ocean recently and I'm hoping that time will work its healing on me.

I kept telling myself that if I got lost in some writing, it would make me feel better. But with the absence of a greyhound head on my chair wheels, it feels too lonely.

Today, however, I'm back at my computer, albeit, that I'm sitting at my dining table in the main part of the house and not in my office in the back annexe room (yet).

But progress is progress.

And I've found that writing is somewhat therapeutic after all.

So next week I'll get back in my usual chair and write.

I've already been going over a few things today and I have some really great writing and publishing resources I want to share with you.

So keep an eye out in your inbox because I'm going to tell you about how you earn a substantial income and keep 100% of the profits from selling ebooks and digital training courses.

And how you can have your own ebooks to sell even if you don't feel like writing.

In the meantime, here are some recent photos.

My Books (And Yours) in The New Online Store

Today I was having a look online at the new Amazon store in Australia.

The new Amazon rules now redirect all Australian customers to the new Australian Store, no matter where they previously shopped.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that you can buy just about anything in the new store from Kindle books, Paperbacks and Hardcover books to computers, electronics, toys, clothes and just about everything else you can think of.

You can even get an Amazon Australia Prime membership with free delivery just like all the other Amazon sites. This service was not available here in Australia until recently so it's quite a big change.

I also saw that my books are now available on this site too:

How To Write An Article In 15 Minutes or Less: Including Research, Proof Reading and Editing.
https://amzn.to/2KefX5J

10 Ways to Make Money Writing Articles
https://amzn.to/2KeUZU4

How to Write 1 Article in 7 Different Ways
https://amzn.to/2Keg0OX

FYI: 'How to Write 1 Article in 7 Different Ways' is a real time-saver because you just need one article outline, and from that you can create 7 different articles which drastically cuts down the time it takes because instead of doing your research 7 times, you only need to do it once.

And my novels are available to buy on Amazon Australia too.

And here's what's in it for you:

If you sell books on Amazon, check to see if they're listed on the new Australian store.

If you're an Amazon Affiliate, you can now get product links for your website/blog for your Australian visitors.

And if you want to write more in less time and make more money, you can now buy my books and ebooks in Australia directly from the new Amazon website.

To me that's win, win, win.

When Everything Gets in The Way of Writing

The past few weeks have been distracting for me for several reasons.

My poor old greyhound, Banjo, is 12 years old now and has seen better days. He gets tired easily and I don't like going out and leaving him alone for too long because he sometimes gets confused, is not eating as much anymore, and gets tired really quickly.

And then my daughter fell and hurt her leg and so has been laid up for a couple of weeks so I've been helping her out with making food so she doesn't have to cook and looking after her incredibly energetic and never-seems-to-take-a-break-from-playing-and-chasing-balls little dog.

As well as all that, the house renovations have been ongoing with engineers with tripods surveying our land, curtains to make, furniture to buy, painting to be done and still more work waiting to be done.

Not only that but it's winter here and so I've been sweeping out and then setting up our wood-burning fire every day because the nights have been getting down to single digits, and because it's mostly hot here, our heating is minimal.

So with all this going on it's been harder than usual to settle down and write, which means when I do I need to be as focused as I can and not let anything distract me while I'm working.

And as we all know, the less time we have to write the more we seem to get done, which is no different for me.

My writing time is short lately and I still have just as much to do, but being present in the moment while I work has meant that I've had to slow down somewhat and work more deliberately because I don't have time for mistakes and do-overs.

And what is surprising about it, is that although I've been working less and having to be more focused, I'm not only producing just as much work but also seems easier.

Most importantly, my income has increased slightly.

So I guess the moral of this story is that deeper focus and being more mindful (meaning keeping my mind in the present and only thinking about the work I'm doing) has really helped my productivity and my finances.

Which means I'm motivated to keep up the good work.

I've also written a short article about being more mindful while writing, at https://ruthiswriting.com/articles/2018/buddhist-writing-advice.html.

Make Money Writing a Book...But How?

"You can't achieve anything unless you know what your goal is" ~ Jay Abraham

I've begun with this quote because Jay Abraham if you don't already know, is one of the worlds top copywriters and his marketing and sales letters have earned millions of dollars.

He really knows what he's talking about. And if he gives advice, I take it.

And so should you.

I was engrossed in watching a DVD recording of Jay when he was part of the Titans of Direct Response Copywriting seminar.

In it, he said that marketing is more important than writing a book, and I'm sure you've heard this before.

He also went on to say that the most important thing about making money from writing a book is to know why you're writing it and who you want to sell it to.

This means that you need to know the reason why you want to write a book in the first place before you even write a word of it and also know who is the person (people) who will want to read it.

If you first know your 'why' before you write a book you'll know what your goal is and then everything you do will be working towards it.

I talk about finding your 'why' in my free ebook, 'How to Write a Book in 6 Days' which you can find (as well as other free ebooks) at http://www.cheritonhousepublishing.com/free-ebooks.html.

So go and find your 'why' and then get to work writing your next book.

The Lesson I Learned About Lost Ideas

A couple of days ago I came across a great idea about writing.

The information was pure gold so I decided there and then to turn it into a blog post so that I could share the joy with my new knowledge.

In my head I planned out exactly what I was going to write and I even had a brilliant idea for an intriguing heading.

Yep, it was going to be great.

But I wasn't at my desk so I made a solid mental plan.

Then later, when I eagerly sat down at my desk, my mind was blank.

What was that great thing I was going to blog about?

I sat and thought for a few minutes, but nothing came.

So I replayed in my mind what I was doing when I had the idea and where it had come from.

I remembered that I was in the garden pulling up loads of big weeds and thinking about how much better it looked without them.

And I was listening to an audio as I worked and it was a podcast about...

Damn! I'd totally forgot what I was listening to.

I thought some more and remembered what it was but I still couldn't remember that golden piece of information was that I wanted to share.

Gone was every thought about it, even my brilliant headline.

I thought some more, but nope...it was gone.

So frustrating.

Even more so because I have a golden rule about writing ideas down as soon as I think of them because I know that no matter how much I tell myself that I'll remember them, I never do.

So this is the advice I'm going to pass onto you instead of whatever that piece of other gold was that I've forgotten.

And that is to never EVER fail to write down a great idea.

Get yourself an ideas book, keep it handy and write down every single idea you ever have in as much detail as you can at the time. Even if the only thing handy to write on is a napkin. Write it down!

And who knows, even if you don't use it straight away, you may find yourself without any ideas in the future and you can look at all your previous ideas for instant inspiration and motivation and most importantly, for great ideas that you DIDN'T forget.

The Lesson I Recently Learned About Habits and My Challenge To You

For the past week I've been dog sitting. I've been looking after my daughter's little dog for 7 days.

She's a sweet little thing, extremely tiny (a Chihuahua cross) and so full of life she wears me out.

She is such a full-on little girl and her energy never seems to wain. She's like the Everyready Bunny and just goes and goes and goes, wanting to play all day.

And she loves toys.

On my desk I have a little stuffed toy of Marvin The Martian character from the Looney Toons cartoons.

Whenever Marvin falls off my desk, the little dog is quick to snatch him up and run off with him.

I took the dog home yesterday and today I sat down to write (haven't done much of that over the past week with the little Tasmanian Devil of a dog whirling around and barking at me when I don't pay her  enough attention), I took out my diary and when I closed the desk drawer, Marvin slipped sideways.

He would have fallen off the desk but quick as a flash I grabbed him and sat him up again.

And it occured to me that the reason I grabbed him so fast was so that the little dog couldn't get him.

But she's not here anymore.

Not only that, but last night, I nearly snapped the end off a dog treat before I gave it to our dog, thinking that I still needed a little piece for the other dog.

It's amazing how quickly my new habits formed. In just 7 days.

And you may be wondering what this has to do with writing, so I'll tell you.

If you have poor writing habits, like not having enough bum-in-chair time or getting easily distracted by bright, shining things on the internet or Facebook, try changing your habits for just 7 days and see the impact in can make into how much writing you get done and how much more money you earn.

Make it a one week challenge to sit and write more and to not get distracted by the internet.

Just sit down every day, write, and ship your work.

Want to Write More Books?

I don't know about you, but most of my income comes from writing books.

I also earn money from freelance writing (but I do less and less these days), online advertising and affiliate marketing.

But mostly from my books.

And if you're the same, then to make more money you need to write more books.

Naturally, this means you need a constant and never-ending supply of ideas.

Which isn't easy.

Years ago I found a way to not only find ideas, but to find great ideas and to know exactly what readers are looking for so I know what to include in my books.

And once you know how to find ideas, if you're like me, you'll quickly go from writers' block to idea overload.

And how do find great ideas?

You just have to start looking.

The Surprising Survey Result About Writers

Recently I took part in a survey for writers and the result was really surprising.

The survey was about what holds people back from writing and earning more.

The answers were there to choose from, and all we had to do was put them in order of what we had the most trouble with, down to what we had the least trouble with.

And I was stunned because I thought that what gave people the most trouble was marketing or not getting enough people to their websites/blogs or even wanting to write better books.

But the number one problem that most writers were having was the same as me.

And that is struggling with mindset and self-discipline.

This really did come as a real surprise because I thought that others who write for a living must have an abundance of ideas and the ability to sit and write every day.

But it seems that they don't.

Luckily, I've been reading a book lately deals with this exact topic.

I borrowed this book from the library because I'd heard great things about it and even read some interesting reviews.

The book is called Deep Work and it's written by Cal Newport and in it he talks about deep work being not just the ability to sit and work deeply without distraction, but working on things that are important to you, and doing less shallow work.

He says deep work is hard and shallow work (checking emails, looking at Facebook, surfing the web, texting,) is easy which is why we distract ourselves with shallow work.

And he gives some brilliant advice and insights into how to do more deep work and how it can not only improve your productivity and the quality of your work, but it can also have a positive impact on the rest of your life.

I don't want to go into too much detail here, but I do want to tell you that this is an excellent book if you want to write more, write better and enjoy it.

If you get a chance to read a copy of this amazing book, I recommend you go for it.

It's full of insights and looks at working in a way that I've never thought of before including how to structure your work so that you know exactly when you are done for the day so that your brain can downshift and recharge properly, instead of always having that nagging feeling that you haven't finished what you started, or haven't done enough work.

Writer's Block - Cured!

Many writers are tormented writer's block while others just laugh at the entire thought of it and say that writer's block is just an excuse for lazy writers.

You probably have your own thoughts on this, and so have many psychologists and there have been many papers published on the topic of writer's block.

Here are two ways that some psychologists see writer's block:

(1) There are sufferers of writer's block and there are those that cannot believe that a creative person like a writer can stop writing (or fail to start) because they've run out of ideas.

(2) There are two reasons why people write - accomplishment or because they simply enjoy writing. Those writing for accomplishment, acceptance, praise, fame, and/or money, are more likely to experience writer's block. Those who write for the enjoyment of writing, itself, experience few if any experiences of writer's block.

But what it comes down to is that if you want to write, then you need to always have a plethora of ideas.

And if you make excuses, you cannot write.

So what can you do if the urge to write is there but the ideas just won't come?

Start by looking for ideas.

Look at what others have written on the same subject that you want to write about.

Doing this will not only give you some great ideas of your own but will also give you insights on how you could do it better.

Remember, you don't have to re-invent the wheel, you just have to create a better wheel than all the others by seeing what they're doing wrong, and doing it right.

And that's how easy it is to start the cure for writer's block.

Have You Seen My New Website Design?

Yesterday I uploaded my new website design for Cheriton House Publishing.

I've had someone working on it over the last couple of weeks after my ebook cover designer, Buddy, over at http://www.coverscorp.com created the new look for it, and then someone else updated all the pages.

If you haven't seen the new design yet you can take a quick peek at http://www.cheritonhousepublishing.com.

Or stay on the site a while and download and read a free ebook or two.

The reasons for the new design are because the site needed updating and also because I have a lot of new books (free and paid) to be added soon.

I'll let you know more as it becomes available.

My next site to be updated will be https://ruthiswriting.com.

That site is really out of date and needs a fresh, modern, new look.

I've already picked out the design I want and once it's updated I'll start adding more content, writing resources and special offers.

How long it will take to get the new design done, I have no idea. But hopefully it will be completed this month.

That's the problem with getting others to do the work for me, is that I don't have as much control over it as I'd like.

Unlike my writing which I have complete control over.

Isn't that one of the great things about being a writer?

Conquer Time Management In One Easy Lesson

If you're like me, then poor time management is something that you have to deal with every day.

Every morning I get up with the best intentions of getting lots of things done and achieving my goals, yet it often all quickly vapourises and I'm left with a day where I wonder where all my time went.

But it's not all bad news.

Over the years I've studied a lot of material and books about better time management and how to schedule my day around my most important tasks, and, more importantly; how not to let other unimportant things (or things that can wait) get in my way.

And now I've discovered a video course that can help you change your habits so that you can stop wasting time and instead, accomplish what is truly important to you (like writing the next bestseller).

The best part is that you can do this in just one day, and not only that, but there is no cost.

Just sign up, log in, and get started.

It's 5 and a half hours of instruction and guidance to help you clear your mind, change your habits and start achieving your goals.

You could complete the course this weekend and start next week as the week you begin to accomplish your goals so that you can live the writers' life you've always dreamed about.

And do you know what's the best thing that I find about being able to work when I need to and have the focus to see projects through to the end?

Satisfaction.

There really is no better way to end the day.

Read more about this course by clicking the link below.

Bad Times Turning Out Good

As you know, I've had a lot of trouble over the past few months with a very strange man who bought the domain name of my old site two years ago and somehow seemed to think that he owned me and that he had the right to tell me what I could and could not publish on my new website.

He bought my old domain name, Writeaholics and I started my new site Ruthiswriting.com.

He's sent me several threatening letters recently AND issued a false DMCA takedown notice, claiming that he owned the copyright of all my old articles, a few of which I published on my new website, and other articles on my site written by other authors.

He doesn't own the copyright of any of my articles (although I did give him the legal right to republish them) and he definitely doesn't own the copyright of other authors' articles yet he still lied about it in the legal DMCA notice, but I removed the articles anyway just to shut him up and to try and get him to leave me alone.

At the time it seemed like a bad thing was happening, but as it turns out, it's all for the good.

I was looking over everything lately, mainly because of my new website design that is happening soon, and decided that it's actually better if I don't have any of my old articles on my new site because otherwise it would be duplicate content, and the search engines don't like indexing sites that have the same content.

So what I've started doing is completely rewriting my old articles and it will be better for several reasons:

1. Duplicate content. As I already said, it's better to have freshly written content on my site rather than use the old outdated articles like he's doing.

2. Updating. Many of the articles need to have the information they contain updated, so while he still has the outdated stuff on his site, mine will all be freshly written and updated content.

3. Some need removing. There are a few articles that are so out of date it's better to remove them altogether. These articles are not only of no use to anyone, but could also be of harm to others if they try and follow the outdated advice. So he can continue to publish outdated advice on my old domain,  name, with my old outdated website design, but I won't do it on my website.

So as it turns out, he actually did me a favour because I now have plenty of content to add to my website. In fact, there are several years of fresh and updated content that I'll be adding.

And no one can lie and say I'm infringing their copyright because it will all be brand new content.

Well, actually there is one person who can lie, and I know he can because he's already done it - on a legal document no less. But surely he's not stupid enough to do it again.

Is he...?

3 Simple Ways to Beat Writers' Block

Although writers' block isn't something that I suffer from myself, I know that many writers do.

So I thought that it would be helpful to provide a short list of 3 things that you can do to beat it.

But these 3 things must be done together. They can help if you do them separately but if done all at the same time they can really help you to blast through your writing.

So here they are:

1. Only set out to do one small task.  It's said that if you tell yourself that you have a whole 'to-do' list to get through, you'll put off starting it. However, if you tell yourself that you just have one small task to complete, then it's easier to sit down and do it.

It's like knowing that you have to brush your teeth but not wanting to do it. So you tell yourself that you'll only brush one tooth, but you end up brushing them all. And it works the same with other jobs you have to do.

Don't tell yourself that you have to do a whole project. Break it down into individual tasks and then attempt the first one, and chances are, you'll end up accomplishing more than you think.

2. Keep a regular writing time. This may sound hard at first, especially if you're already trying to juggle kids and a job. But we all have some quiet time in our day that we can use for our writing.

I once saw an ad for online shopping, it said, "It's 1 a.m., the kids are in bed...let's shop." I thought "Wow! 1 a.m. is late to start online shopping, but if it's all the time you have..."

I've even known some writers who get up at 4am to get their writing done before the kids get up and their day starts.

3. Use a timer. You can't concentrate if you're always watching the clock. So use a timer and then lose yourself in your work. I also find that when I know the timer is running I'm less likely to get distracted. My timer is often my best friend when I'm trying to get some work done. And also I'm often surprised at how much I can get done once I start.

And that's it. That's the 3 things that, when used together, can really help you blast through any writing project, or at least, it really helps me.

I always keep a regular writing time, divide my projects into tasks and list them in the order they need to be done and I use a timer to keep me on track and to stop me wasting time.

I also use brain entrainment audios to block out other noises and help me to concentrate.  My favourite one is Brain Salon which is something I use nearly every day and it's more than paid for itself over time.

Try a free demo for yourself at http://www.brainsalon.com/demo/?a=writelady.

The Two Important Writing Perfections

In a recent article, I wrote about The Buddhist Six Perfections of Writing.

It's about how the Six Buddhist Perfections for life and spiritual practice can also be attributed to writing.

And I thought that two of these perfections were most pertinent:

Patience

Concentration

Patience - because writing takes time (so does everything). Not only that but it usually takes much longer to do than I think it will. Or sometimes writing seems to be slow but I'm actually working at a good pace so when I finally look at the clock I see that I haven't been writing for as long as I think. But I still need to keep my head down and work while I'm doing it. So patience is always required.

Concentration - because writing can often require 'deep work' in order to organise research, outline and stay on track of what I'm trying to say. Writing is not something that I can do while watching a movie or singing a song. It takes complete attention so that I can concentrate.

No doubt you've noticed yourself that you need a lot of patience, especially when working on a large writing project, and concentration to stick to what you're doing and to go deep into your own thoughts.

I know that makes writing sound difficult to do, but it's not.

Not if you have enough patience and the ability to concentrate.

You can read my complete article at
https://ruthiswriting.com/articles/2018/6-perfections.html

(Did you notice my new https in the URL? Still so pleased with my new website security update.)

My Website Was Hacked

I had a bit of trouble last week after someone hacked my website, added content to every page (probably malware) and sent out spam from my email address.

My hosting company took the action of taking my website offline immediately and contacted me about the spam issue which I put a stop to straight away.

This all came about at a most inconvenient time because my daughter has just bought her first house and my husband and I spent several days last week helping her to get the house cleaned and ready and buy necessary furniture and appliances.

I also spent an entire day measuring, pinning and taking up curtains.

And then at the weekend we hired a van and helped her to move.

And while all this was going on, and I was physically exhausted, someone hacked one of my websites, RuthIsWriting.

So then I had to spend hours on the phone talking to the staff at my hosting company trying to figure out what to do about the spam and how to do it.

Then I had to remove whatever had been added to my site.

Luckily I use Adobe Dreamweaver so it was easy to get the software to check if any of the online website files were different from the backup files stored on my computer.

It checked, and apparently every single file had been altered. Also, a file I didn't recognise had been added as well.

So I deleted the rogue file and all the other files and did a complete upload of all the backup files stored on my computer.

Then to make sure it didn't happen again, I bought and added a security certificate to my site so that now instead of starting with the usual http:// it now begins with https:// to show that the site is secure.

I've been thinking for a while about adding security to all my sites because I've been reading recently how it's getting easier and easier for hackers to get into unsecured websites and that soon Google won't index sites that don't have a security certificate.

I had no idea how to buy a certificate or how to attach it to my site, so it took me most of the day to research it and find out. It seems that there are different levels of security but I only needed a simpler one because I don't take credit card payments on my site. I use eJunkie, Amazon and PayPal to process all my website payments.

So if you've noticed recently that my website was offline for 3 days, that is why.

But now it's not only sorted out, but it's secure and can't be hacked again.

And all the while I was dealing with this whole issue, I smiled to myself and thought how being a writer used to mean just writing, but now it seems I have to be a bit of a technical wizard as well.

I guess times really do change.

But if you have a website and something like this happens to you, the simplest way I found to get a security certificate was to purchase it from my hosting company and then I used the SSL/security app in my control panel of the website to add the certificate, which was straight forward and easy to do.

So if you want to visit my extremely secure website you can do so at https://ruthiswriting.com.

And I've currently got someone working on the redesign of the whole site so soon it will look all modern because at the moment it's looking a bit dated.

I'm looking forward to the new design and the added peace of mind from the security update.

Get Paid To Write Short Articles

There is no doubt that the Internet is information driven.

People come online in their millions every day looking for information.

This has opened up a huge market for freelance writers because so many people (and companies) want to have a website or blog but don't have the time or the ability to write their own content.

And it's easy to just take a look around online to see that there are so many writers earning money writing regular, short, online articles, including my friend and colleague, Yuwanda Black, who has even written an ebook about it that not only shows you how she did it, but how you can do it too.

So where do you start?

There are thousands of freelance writing opportunities to be found on freelancing websites like Upwork.com. This is a website where I first made my way into freelance writing.

And some writers are earning over $3,000 a month just from writing short articles. And they're only working part-time. Often just a couple of days a week.

I recently wrote about one such writer who is regularly earning around $3,500 a month from writing short articles just a couple of days a week.

So shoot on over and read it and use her story to inspire you to start writing and earning money not just every month or every week, but every day.

Does a Writer Need a Virtual Office Address?

The subject of virtual office addresses came up in some correspondence last week.

A virtual office is simply an address that makes it look like you actually have an office that you work from. These addresses can be usually be rented on a monthly or yearly basis.

You just pay the fee and you can use the virtual office address which would be something like "Suite 100, Impressive Road. UpMarket Town." The company that provides the address also passes on all your mail to you, plus can provide other services too like answering the phone and taking messages.

I know that there are some writers who do actually have an office that they work from but most of us work from home.

And as a writer, it's not really necessary to have a "pretend" office address because we don't have any clients that we need to see in person.

But it is necessary to protect your private address online so you can (if you want) rent a virtual office address or use a PO BOX address. I use a PO BOX address as well as use my accountant's address for my business. That way, even though I mostly work from home, I never have to divulge my private address to anyone.

On the other hand, if you're a lawyer or an accountant, or anyone else who has to meet with clients face to face, then having a virtual office address will make you look cheap or make it look like your business is failing because clearly, you can't be meeting with clients at your office if you don't have one. And it's easy to find out if an office address is real or not.

But for writers, having a virtual office address is fine if you want to have one, but IMHO, somewhat unnecessary as a simple PO BOX address will suffice AND it's much cheaper.

Unlike lawyers and accountants, we have no need to pretend that we have an office when we don't.

It doesn't matter where you do your writing, as long as you do it.

Simple Advice To Write More and Earn More

A few days ago I was listening to an audio recording of a conversation with top copywriter, Bob Bly. http://www.justaddhustle.com/session1/.

Bob has been a copywriter most of his working life.

He works from an office he rents instead of working from home because he finds he gets more done this way.

Many copywriters have 'copy cubs' working for them but Bob never has because he prefers to do all his writing himself so that if anyone hires him to do their copy for them, they can be sure that it is actually Bob that will work for them and not a hired cub.

And one of the things he said in this audio really struck me as not only sage advice but also so simple that most people miss it.

He was asked about how much money he earns from his copywriting and how he manages to earn it consistently because Bob is one of the most highest-earning copywriters on the planet.

And his answer was simple. He said, (and I paraphrase because I can't remember his exact words) "I work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. And when you work that much you have to earn a lot of money."

It made me nod my head in agreement because so often I get asked about earning money from writing because so many people never seem to be able to do it.

And when I delve deeper into the problem, it almost always turns out that they're not really doing much writing.

Their ideal is to write for a few hours every day.

But in reality, they're not writing very much even in a week let alone writing every day. It's also surprising (or perhaps not) how many people sit down at their computer every day, but instead of writing, they goof off on Facebook or forums or just idly surf the net jumping from one website to the next.

So the real 'secret' to earning a lot of money from writing is to do what Bob Bly does and do a lot of writing.

How much money could you earn if you were working 12 hours a day? And I mean actually doing writing instead of being distracted by other things.

I know I could quite easily knock my earnings out of the park (so to speak) if I kept those kinds of writing hours.

But I do work several hours a day and that is how I keep my writing income as consistent as I possibly can.

How about you?

The 'Secret' To Selling More Books

So you've written a book.

So what?

Who cares?

No one if you don't tell them about it.

But it's not enough to tell people that you've written a book.

You have to make them want to buy it.

But how do you do that?

It's not enough to just advertise your book and say "come and get it."

The 'secret' is to use emotion.

No one buys things they don't need without emotion.

You need to make them lust after your book.

So first you need to know who your market is.

And then you have to market directly to them.

Use the words in your sales page that they want to hear so that they "just have to buy it."

A good sales page can convince someone to buy your book even though they didn't even know they wanted to. But once they read your sales copy, they can't NOT buy your book.

The best way to learn how to do this is from the masters. The great copywriters.

And they learn everything they know from copywriters who've gone before them and they study marketing and learn everything they can to make their customers buy their products, even if they didn't want to buy them before.

They say that you can sell a mediocre product with great marketing, but you can't sell a great product with mediocre marketing.

So learn all you can about marketing with emotion.

Done correctly, it can rapidly multiply your sales.

Wouldn't you rather sell thousands of copies of every book you write instead of just a few dozen?

The Mind Of A Great Copywriter

I've been talking a lot lately about swipefiles and how useful they can be.

But, if you do it right, you can use a swipefile to get inside the mind of great copywriters to not only see how they put their million-dollar ads together, but to understand the psychology of what they're doing.

You see, swipefiles aren't meant to be for actually swiping (stealing) the work of copywriters.

The way to get the most out of them is to take a really deep look into how they construct a sales page.

If you look deeply enough you can see how well they know their market and what emotion they're targeting.

They could be targeting jealousy, greed, lust, guilt, pride, or perhaps they're targeting self-esteem or trying to elicit joy or excitement.

Whatever it is, if you study the ads in a swipefile, you'll not only see the emotion they're aiming for, but you'll be able to see how they use it to manipulate the reader to make them want to buy.

Once you really see what they're doing it can be a real "Aha!" moment.

All ads manipulate. That's their job.

Copywriters know this and they look at all the features in the product they're writing about and turn them into desirable benefits that their target market can't resist.

And if you're writing a sales page for a book you've written, it should be easier for you because you know your own product better than any copywriter.
